Appalachian B Team Wins Over I Catawba B 7-0 Jack Groce Gets Loose For 75 Yards And Only Score Of The Game Here Jack Groce, Wilkesboro lad who made an enviable record at Wilkesboro in high school, broke the game wide open here Thurs day night when he scampered for 75 yards and the only score of the ball game as Appalachian Baby Mountaineers defeated the Rinkydinks of Catawba College 7 to 0. The crowd of about 1,200 had little to get excited about until the third quarter when Jack faked a reverse and ran around left end down the sidelines to get away from all tacklers. Appalachian threatened sever al times during the game and amassed a total of 308 yards j rushing. But Catawba's defenses j Leld like a stone wall inside the 20-yard line on four scoring I threats. The Rindydinks threat-j ened in opening minutes of the game, going to the 12-yard line and never could get up steam a gain. Most exciting play of thej first period was a 41-yard run by Jim Moore, of Winston-Sa lem, a Baby Mountaineer halt back. That drive carried to the 12 and bogged. In the second period Jack Groce brought the crowd to their feet with a run of 52 yards tc the 22-yard line but the drivt bogged down on the six with s fourth down pass dropped in the end zone. The third period had all the scoring, when Groce maneuver ed his brilliant run and Davif added the point from placement Claude Rldrldge, of Elkin who played brilliantly for Appa lachian on defense, gave the crowd something to cheer about in the fourth quarter when he returned a Catawba punt from the 35 to the ten-yard line, but there Appalachian was held a gain. tin the closing minutes , Ca tawba's ace passer, Joe Popp connected with a 40-yard heave to Hunnesucker. But the passing drive was stopped when Beit Hunnicutt, of Appalachian, go1 a Popp pass and ran at back 61 yards to the Catawba 20-yard line, where the game ended with Appalachian threatening.
