Frazier, Mr. and j Mrs. Earl Meadows and chil dren, .'Bobby and Sarah, visited Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Meadows at Martinsville, Va. Sunday. The Messrs. Meadows are brothers. Forester and Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Blair were among the number from this city attending the North Carolina-Notre Dame football game in New York City. Messrs. Charles H. Day, Bob Day, Voyce Cheatwood and Lo max Kilby were in New York City Saturday to see Carolina play Notre Dame in the football game at Yankee Stadium. Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Brame, Mr. and Mrs. I. H. McNeill, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Jen kins saw the Carolina-Notre Dame football game in New York City Saturday afternoon. Misses Kathleen Hayes and Alice Cassel left Thursday night to spend a few days in New York City. They attended the Carolina Notre Dame football game at the Yankee Stadium in New York Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Richard John ston were among the local peo ple in New York City during the week-end to see the Carolina Notre Dame football game in the j Yankee Stadium Saturday after-) noon. Jarvy Baxter Johnson, dam age controlman, second class, USN, of Hays, N. C., is serving aboard the auxiliary oiler USS Platte, which is one of the units | of Vice Admiral Gerald F. Bo-! gan's Western Task Force, now; engaged in the joint Army-Navy! Exercise "Miki". Primary ob-i jective assigned the 90 ships and 40,000 servicemen in Ad miral Bogan's sea-air armada is the "retaking" of the Hawaiian Islands, theoretically in the hands of an aggressor force, by amphibious assault troops of the Army's Second Infantry Divl: ion. Before entering the Naval service Johnson attended Bassett High School in Bassett, Va.# Mr. W. J. Caroon, of the In surance Service & Credit Cor poration, is in Chicago attending the American Finance Confer ence. The conference will be in progress today, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Mr. Caroon is ex pected back home the last ot the week. Mr. Bob Miskelly, who is undergoing treatment at Moun tain Home Veterans' hospital in Bristol, Va.-Tenn., was home the past week-end with his family. Bob underwent a major opera tion on his right knee several weeks ago. The condition of the knee shows some improvement and Bob hopes to return home soon. Father Of Dermont Smith Died Thursday Lexington.?Harvey C. Smith, 62, died about 5:45 p. m. Thursday in a Lexington hospital after suffering a stroke earlier in the day. Mr. Smith was a. brother of Lexington's Mayor Dr. J. A. Smith. He had been a foreman with Thomasville Chair Com pany for 18 years. Survivors include his wife, the former Miss Mattie Weavil; three daughters, Mrs. William Petty, Selma, Ala., and Mrs. C. H. Bodie and Mrs. O. M. Burton, both of Thomasville; a son, Dermont Smith, North Wilkesboro; three brothers, D r. Smith, Walter Smith and John B. Smith, all of Lexington; three sisters, Mrs. J. W. Foust and Mrs. Claude Kep ley, both of Lexington, and Mrs. R. L. Bowers, Lexington, Route 6, and five grandchildren. Funeral service was held Sat urday afternoon in Lexington. Among those from here attend ing the service were Mrs. D. .T. Carter, Miss Breta Poe Scroggs, Mrs. R. B. Parsons, Mrs. Tal Pearson, Mr. and Mrs. Buster Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Clark, N. O. ? Taft Michael With Sprinkle's Barber Shop In This City Sprinkle's Barber Shop, opened several weeks ago in the Wilkes Drug Store building on Ninth street by P. E.
