Always Delighted
To Lend A Hand
Selma, Nov. 17.?Judge Wil
liam I. Godwin of Selma, who
presides over Recorder's ? Court
in Johnston County every week,
is wondering whether the anany
mous sender of a postcard to his
honor is hinting or not.
Judge Godwin, who hears a
number of nonsupport cases each
session of court, received a post
card mailed in Smithfiold which
contained the following joke:
"In a domestic relations court,
the judge listened intently to
both sides in a case against an
elderly man who was charged
by his wife with nonsupport.
After all of the evidence was in,
the judge told the defendant:
'You haven't taken proper care
of this good woman and I'm go
ing to give her $25 a month."
"The defendant beamed with
pleasure. 'That's mighty nice of
Your Honor,' he said, 'and I'll
give her a dollar or two from
time to time myself."

RAMBLERS DEFEAT MOUNTAIN
LIONS 32-6 IN ANNUAL GAME
Wilkesboro high school Ramb
lers defeated North Wilkesboro's
Mountain Lions 32 to 6 here Fri
day night before a crowd of 1,
500 shivering fans who failed to
show the usual volume of excite
ment over the annual contest for
the championship of the "State of
Wilkes."
Without Ray Triplett, who
spent practically all the game on
the sidelines because of a leg
injury, the Ramblers ran up a
lead of 18 points and coasted to a
one-sided victory.
The Mountain Lions surged
forty in two drives, one reaching
pay dirt for a score and the other
bogging down near the five-yard
line.
Wilkesboro received and drove
to N. Wilkesboro's 36, where the
drive was halted following a
penalty against Wilkesboro.Claude
Nichols, who played a sensational
game as Triplett's understudy,
kicked out inside the one-yard
line. Stoker immediately kicked
out from North Wilkesboro's end
zone, but it was a short boot,
carrying only to the 20, and
Wilkesboro was threatening again.
On the first play from the 20
Nichols dashed over his own right
tackle to score. The second
Wlikesboro score came quickly.
Emerson recovered a North
Wilkesboro fumble on the 38.
Harold Dancy picked up eight
and Dan Linney ran through the
Mountain Lions 27 yards to the
three. Two plays later Linney
scored. A Garwood to Edwards
pass carried 35 yards to the 6
and two plays later Dancy went
over from the two.
Bartley Harrold, showing his
speed which makes him a promis
ing backfield prospect, ran the
kickoff back 42 yards to Wilkes
boro's 48, but the Mouhtain,
Lions bogged down again, later (
in the second period the Mountain
Lions drove to the 21 with the
aid of a 15-yard penalty. Jim
Gillean plowed through to the
16 and Jim Moore picked up six ,
yards to the ten. Quarterback Carl;
Swofford threw to Smith Hudson
in the end zone with Hudson
making a beautiful catch for
North Wilkesboro's touchdown.
Jim Moore was downed. at the ?
goal line on plunge for the extra
point.
Ray Triplett made his first ap-1
pearance in a running play in the
third period and carried 13 yards
for a first down on North Wilkes-j
boro's 23. Harold Dancy ran 20
yards to the one. Triplett. went,
over but a clipping penalty null
ified the play and the ball went
back to the 16. Triplett eluded i
several tacklers to carry for 14 to
the two and went over on the
next play. Bobby Parker, who
played a sensational game for
the Ramblers, broke through to
block a North Wilkesboro punt on
the 11 to set up the final score,
which Harold Dancy made on the
next play.
The fourth quarter was score
less as Wilkesboros reserves were
used more freely than in earlier
parts of the game. The Ramblers
used more than two teams in the
contest. A North Wilkesboro
drive in the final period was
stopped with a fumble on fourth
down on the four-yard line.
Triplett's leg injury effect was
shown in his tries for extra
points, making only two out of
five placement kicks. Johnny
Garwood, playing at quarterback
instead of the injured Bill Byrd,
played a good game and passed
well. Claude Nichols, Harold
Dancy and Dan Linney ran well
for the Ramblers. The Wilkesboro
line changed fast throughout the
game. Nichols' punting was very
effective for the Ramblers.
Carl Swofford passed well for
North Wilkesboro but was hamp
ered by lack of protection. Moore
and Gillean were the leading
ground gainers in North Wilkes
boro's offense.
