Monday, November 28, 1949 more Advantages In Shopping In Wilkesboros The Christmas shopping season has be gun. During the next four weeks more buying will be done in retail stores than in any other comparable period in the year. For this holiday shopping period the merchants of the Wilkesboros are pre pared?with bountiful stocks in wide variety. It is not an accident that North Wilkes boro ranks in the top ten towns in the nation in volume of trade with respect to population. The stores are here?a busi ness district comparable to that of a city of 25,000 people. Except for the dubious value as a con versation topic around the bridge table, we can see no excuse whatever for peo ple of this community to go to larger ci ties to buy merchandise. The stores are here?modern, up-to date and well stocked?and the prices here are certainly lower for comparable quality. There can be no price compari son that would make it worthwhile to make long trips to buy elsewhere. The business houses here pay a great part of our taxes, and lend their support to advancement of every worthy cause in ?this community. But we would not urge your trading here solely on that ground. We suggest and urgently request that you give merchants of the Wilkesboros a chance at your business, because we sin cerely believe that it would be to your advantage as a customer. It would mean more money in your pocket and better goods for the money that you spend. Merchants of the Wilkesboros have assembled the greatest stocks of Christ mas merchandise in the history of this community. Quality is the best ever of fered, and prices are definitely lower than at any time since the war. o Whittaker Chambers may not be a liar in testifying against Alger Hiss, but the bulk of his testimony indicates he lied and relied on his own account.?Greens boro Daily News. o Chief Attorney for Harry Bridges is jailed six months for contempt of court. Little Theatre Group Is Community Asset The. Little Theatre Group organized here last year is rapidly becoming an in tegral and valuable part of the com munity. This organization of amateur actors and actresses provides the community with splendid stage talent?home grown variety, and gives the participants an op portunity to use their talents in enjoy able endeavor. Not only does the Little Theatre pro^ vide entertainment, but it provides train ing in elocution. LIFE'S BETTER WAY * WALTER E. ISENHOUR High Point, N. C., Route ?* WHAT DOES YOUR LIFE COUNT FOR? Every man's life, as be journeys through this world, counts for something. We should not loose sight of this fact. The great Apostle Paul tells us, "For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself." (Romans 14:7) There is no come back against God's holy Word that will stand. We must take it at its face Value. Let us realize that we are social beings, and as we live among each other, labor and toil with each other, and travel along life's pathway with each other, that our lives are counting in some way. All who live evil, sinful, wicked lives certainly may realize that their lives are counting against their own souls, against the lives and.souls of others, against, their coun try, their nation, and the wbrld; but a bove all against God and His Cause, and against heaven, as they grieve God by helping keep precious souls out of heav en. Their lives count for the devil and darkness, for hell and damnation. When we think of it from that standpoint we realize the seriousness of giving one's life, time, talent and soul to the devil in stead of God. Then when we think of life from the standpoint of godliness and righteous ness, and from that of great usefulness, and live accordingly, how wonderful! Every man whose life counts to the limit of his ability, and through the golden opportunities which God gives him for doing good, which he graciously accepts and puts into use, may well be assured of the fact that he shall not live in vain. He blesses humanity and honors God by his life. He shall leave an influence be hind to live after him when he depart^ this life that shall lead others to accept Christ and reach heaven. This should be the supreme desire, aim, plan and pur pose of all men. But, what does your life count for? This is a great question. Think of it seriously. Presley Myers and Clifford Moore were in New York Novem ber 12 to see the Carolina-Notre Dame football game, which they did. Before going over to "The House that Ruth Built," the pair of Wilkes gentlemen stopp ed at a Greek restaurant for a bite to eat. In a hurry to get over to Yankee Stadium before the big rush started and to have time for a look around, they left their field glasses hanging in the restaurant. Later they missed the field glasses and wrote them off as So much loss which couldn't be recovered. But after the game they were on their way back to their ho tel, and were going by this same Greek restaurant when they de cided to go in and have a look for their field glasses. It was cold that late after noon in the big town. The air felt like snow. Mr. Moore and Mr. Myers had their coat collars up, their hats pulled down and their hands thrust about so deep in the pockets of their overcoats. They walked in the restaur ant and gave the place a once over from front to back. What they were looking for' was the waitress who had served them lunch. They thought perhaps she might know something about the i field glasses?maybe more than I anyone else. They looked and looked but didn't see the girl. Meanwhile, the proprietor was crouched be hind the cash register looking at Mr. Myers and Mr. Moore with an earnest eye. After giving the joint a sec ond once over. Mr. Myers and Mr. Moore stepped up before the cash register, and the proprietor backed off with wide-open and staring eyes. Finally, one of the two got up enough nerve to ask if field glasses had been found there. . . ;*** is, - An expression of relief show ed all over the face of the Greek restaurant owner. "Yes, sure, we got your field glasses, yes sir. Here they are," he said as he fished the glasses from back of the counter. "I thought this was a stick up," the humble Oreek said. Naturally, everybody was hap py about the whole thing. Jack Frost has been bla nmt tor a lot of damage he dldhX do.
