It said it is taking money ap propriated for other projects to speed work on the first phase of the aircraft warning network. Division of the funds?with $31,200,000 to be spent on Alas ka installations and the rest in the United States?emphasizes the armed forces' concern for defense of the nation's North west frontier, lying just a few miles across the Bering Strait :rom Russia. Sites Obtained The announcement said the money would allow "necessary construction ... of early warn ing and control electronic equip ment." It added that sites have been selected and surveyed for most of the proposed installa tions. Rights of entry, property leases, and construction plans also are ready. Charlie Spivak Coming; Dec. 20 Aong the more prized mo ments of bandleader Charlie Spivak's brilliant career is the high praise he received from the lips of Fritz Kreisler, the emi nent classical violinist and so loist. Spivak brings his orches tra to North Wilkesboro for the V. F. W.'s big holiday dance De cember 20. Charlie had recorded an al bum of Kreisler compositions for RCA Victor. Called "Kreisler Fhvorites," the records were un usual in that it was the first time that the virtuoso had ap proved having his compositions played in dance tempos. Also, it required transposing the classi cal Kreisler violin solos to trum pet parts. Before the albums were re leased, Kreisler was invited to the record studio for a preview. After listening to the discs. Kreisler bestowed his official ap proval and marveled at Spivak's trumpet virtuosity. "Kreisler Favorites" is one of the most popular and best-sell ing albums made in 1947. The solos by Spivak not only received high praise but it was the con sensus of opinion in musical circles that Charlie was the on ly dance trumpeter with enough technical equipment and virtuos ity to play the extremely diffi cult concertos originally conceiv ed for the very flexible violin. o Haywood Man Takes Lead In Corn Contest An official yield of 141.3 bushels per acre has put a Haywood County farmer out in front in the race for the 1949 corn-growing championship, Dr. E. R. Collins, agronomist for the State College Extension Service, said today. Unless a higher yield is reported within the next few weeks, Dwight Williams of Waynesville will be come North Carolina's new corn champion. The Haywood County farmer grew his high-yielding corn on rich bottomland. He fertilized with two tons of stable manure and 200 pounds of 7-7-7 per acre at plant ing time. On May 6, he seeded Dixie 17 hybrid in 42-inch rows, spacing it 12 inches in the drill. He side-dressed twice with 100 pounds of ANIL per acre each time. Runner-up in the state-wide contest to date is a Wayne Coun ty 4-H Club boy, Dale Gainey, whose measured acre yielded 139.3 bushels. He used hybrid N. C. 27, fertilizing with 2105 pounds of 3-8-16 at planting and side-dress ing with 942 pounds of soda. Dr. Collins says this field was obviously over-fertilized. But he adds that even with excessive fert ilizer the cost per bushel, in cluding labor, was only 82 cents. "This again emphasizes that high yields are generally the most profitable yields," he said. i The agronomist added that the contest is still open. Farmers who , think they have exceptional yields, should contact their county agent. If the agent thinks the corn is promising enough, he will arrange' for an official harvest. The North Carolina Foundation Seed Pro ducers offer a 100-dollar savings bond for the highest yielding fields in each of three areas? mountains, piedmont and costal plain. A second 100-dollar bond will be awarded the highest of the three as the state winner. NEW V. F.
