1 CUM CARTER'S North Wilkesboro's Family Jeweler POULTRY PRODUCTION IS BECOMING VAST INDUSTRY IN WILKES PRODUCING AREA Wilkes county commercial poultry area produced from 3G to 40 per cent of the poultry produced and marketed on com mercial scale in North Carolina, Tom Jenrette, manager of the Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, stated recently in a radio ad dress over station WKBC here. In the address Mr. Jenrette was referring to the four ba3ic industries in Wilkes county? timber, dairying, fruit growing and poultry. Figures recently released by the North Carolina crop report ing service revealed that during the first ten months of this year twenty-four million eggs were set by commercial hatcheries in North Carolina,, 35 to 40 per cent of which were set by the hatcheries of the Wilkes area. ' The poultry industry in North Carolina, and particularly in the Wilkes area, is growing rapidly, Mr. Jenrette said. The state's commercial hatcheries during the month of October produced 3,291,000 chicks, which was i the largest October output on I record. This October production was 108 per cent larger than the October hatch of last year and 226 per cent larger than the 1943-47 average for the month. On the basis of figures given by the crop reporting service, about one and one-quarter mil lion chicks were hatched by hatcheries of the Wilkes area during the month of October. Production of chicks for the first ten months of this year in the Wilkes area is estimated at approximately 20,000,000. Estimate of the gross income of the poultry industry in the Wilkes area is difficult to achieve because it is impossible to get a complete record of pro duction and marketing from hundreds of growers. But it is evident from the figures avail able that poultry production in It is almost impossible for us *o name prices on every item we '?arry in stock. Your best bet is to visit the store often. A , survey of poultry production . made three years ago is already out of date and is worthless in trying to arrive at estimates of 1 poultry production now. Meanwhile, many poultrymen have improved and enlarged their facilities and are capable of increasing-production at times when the trend is favorable for increased profits.
