THE JOURNAL-PATRIOT SPORTS Dwight Nichols, Sports Editor LIBERTY THEATRE FOOTBALL TROPHIES PRESENTED TUESDAY The Liberty Theatre football trophy presented annually to the team winning the North Wilkes boro-Wilkeaboro game was pre sented to Wilkesboro football team in school assembly Tues day morning. Also presented were individual trophies to the player on each team selected by team mates as the best blocker. Jack Gaddy, of the North Wilkesboro Mountain Lions, and Dean Edwards, of the Wilkesboro Ramblers, received these trophies. yWm. T. Long, Wilkesboro dis trict superintendent, opened the program and explained the awards. Roy W. "Forehand, manager of Liberty Theatre, donor of the trophies, made a brief address, in which he emphasized the import ance of clean living, sportsman ship and the desire to excell what produces champions. He also em phasized teamwork, and called at tention to blockers as "unseen heroes" who clear the path for ball carriers who score the points. Co-Captain Bobby Story ac cepted the winning team trophy for the Ramblers, who have won the trophy for the second con secutive year. Winning the trophy three straight years gives perm anent possession. The blocker trophies are given each year and are the property of recipients. I Ramblers Coach Marvin Hoff man spoke briefly, thanking mem bers of his team for the excel lent effort put forth that won for the school the Highland con ference title two years in a row without a conference defeat. Ray Triplett, Wilkesboro all-, state backfield ace, spoke briefly and reported on the Shrine Bowl , game jp which he participated in Charlotte, scoring a touchdown 1 for the winning North Carolina team, and also spoke of the Greensboro Daily News All-State banquet which he attended with Coach Hoffman in Greensboro Monday night. Ray thanked team mates for the excellent play which enabled him to make a good record in high school foot ball. Jack Gaddy, Mountain Lions tackle who was voted the best blocker on his team, was ac companied at the presentation by his coach, Tom Boyette. A fam ily store all under one roof. 13-19-2t Roy Triplett And Coach Hoffman At All-State Banquet Ray Triplett, Wilkesboro half back selected to the Greensboro Daily News ail-state football team, and his coach, Marvin "Red" Hoffman, were among the guests at the Greensboro Daily News and Greensboro Touchdown club's all state ban quet held at the Plantation Club in Greensboro Monday night. This banquet is one of the biggest events in the state for football players and coaches, and honors college and high school all-state selections. This year represented the first time that a player from this community has been selected for tbis covet ed all-state honor. More than 400 were in at tendance, including high school and college coaches, college all state players, high school all state members and Touchdown Club members and invited guests. P. G. (Fats) Heath, of Ra leigh, a prominent Southern Conference official, was the principal speaker. Smith Barrier, Greensboro Daily News sports editor, presented the gold bas ketballs and certificates to col lege and high school all-state se lections. Trophies for outstand ing linemen were presented Tackle Louis Allen, of Duke, and Jerry Kincaid, of Salisbury, was named for the high school a ward. A number of coaches made brief talks. o Millers Creek Splits With West Yadkin Millers Creek and West Yad kin high school basketball teams split a double-header at Millers Creek Tuesday night. They , deserve all the more credit be- j cause of the handicap of having no gymnasium . . . Dean Ed-1 wards, Wilkesboro center, and Joe Eller, North Wilkesboro cen ter, are two of the best basket ball prospects in this commun ity. Congratulations to the North Wilkesboro Optimist club for completing arrangements for the Wilkes county basketball tourna ment. Such ft tournament well conducted will give sportsman ship a badly needed "shot in the arm" in Wilkes county. Eight teams of girls and an equal num ber of boys will make a well balanced tournament, and any team is capable of winning. Mount Airy Qraniteers of the i Blue Ridge league lost two players in baseball draft this' month. Pitcher Pistol Pete ' Treece and Outfielder Dub Ak- i ins were called up by teams of 1 a class C team in Texas. R'ad- . -ford's pitcher Israel Ten was' also drafted to class C.
