Monday, December 19, 1949 Bank Modernizes To Better Serve The Bank of North Wilkesboro Friday afternoon and evening held an "Open House" to the public in observance of the completion of remodeling, renovating and modernization of the bank's various de partments. When the Bank of North Wilkesboro building was constructed the quarters for the bank were then considered spacious and more than adequate for many years. But the bank has grown with the com munity and this growth necessitated changes to improve facilities and allow more space for the business of the bank. During the past few years the lobby of the bank, which had been considered large, has often been crowded with cus tomers. The modernization program called for complete remodeling, which has been ac complished very effectively. The book keeping department was moved from the street floor to a newly constructed mez zanine, which increased the total floor space by one-third. The Bank of North Wilkesboro's re modeling program is a step forward by an institution which serves well in its ca pacity in this community. The officers and directors of the bank deserve commenda tion for this progressive development and splendid accomplishment. LIFE'S BETTER WAY WALTER E. ISENHOUP Hifh Point, N. C., Route 4 WHO AM I? I am owned by every person who jour neys across the years of life. I dwell in homes of poverty and homes of wealth. The poorest people own me and the rich est own me. I am owned by the best edu cated people on earth, and I am owned by the most ignorant. I belong to them all. People in all kinds of business, re gardless of what kind it is, own me. I live with the farmer who cultivates the soil; I dwell with the people who work in the factories, shops and mills. I am found in every office and every store, every hospital and every clinic. I am found in all kinds of schools, colleges and universities. I am found in every church and denomination on the face of the earth, and at every place where the heathen worship. I'm there. I belong to all the religions and cults of the entire world. All parents own me, school teachers own me, ministers of the Gospel own me, Sunday school teachers own me, atheists and infidels own me, lawyers, doctors and nurses own me. Young people every where own me, without an exception. Merchants of all kinds own me. Writers,' typesetters, printers and publishers own me. Every actor and movie star on earth owns me. I am owned by every ball room, every theatre, every road house, every liquor store, and every pool room in the world. Every gambler who sits around the card table owns me. I belong to them all. I am owned by the gay and the giddy, the thoughtless and the frivolous, also by the most sincere and solemn. Drunkards and liars own me; dishonest people eve rywhere own me; adulterers and adul own me; criminals of all kinds I go with them to prison and to execution. I likewise follow everybody to judgment. I am owned by all who deal in strong drink, or use it in any form. I am owned by people in business that is a curse all over the world, as well as by peQple whose business is a blessing all over the world. I am owned by people who dress in the finest clothes and keep up with all the fashions of the world. I am owned by people who dress in the poorest raiment, or even in rage and tatters. I am owned by those who dress almost nude and shamefully expose their bodies to the eyes of mankind. I am owned by the best peo ple on earth as well as the most wicked and vile. I curse and blight the lives of mankind, and I bless and uplift the lives of mankind. I am owned by people in the best of health, and I am owned by peo ple in the worst of health. I am with men, and owned by them, while living and when dying. In fact I live and last on and on to represent my owners when they have passed from time to long eternity. Furthermore I stay with my owner in eternity. I am with him forever. I travel in the finest and most costly automobiles on earth; I ride in the finest and fastest trains on earth; I fly in the most beautiful and speedy, magnificent and grand airplanes that cleave the clouds and mount up toward the skies. I ride with men in the poorest cars, the poorest trains, and the cheapest and sor riest airplanes. I go with men on horse back, in wagons, and even walk with men along life's easiest or most difficult path ways. I travel wherever man travels; I dwell wherever man dwells. Some who own me while they live be come bright, burning and shining lights to the world. Some become great, good and wonderful. Some who own me are very godly, righteous, prayerful, noble and holy. They are a wonderful blessing to the world. They make their mark that is sublime. Some of them rise to fame and great glory. Some live marvelous lives in a quiet and peaceable way, though they never rise to great renown. Such owners bless and enrich the lives of others all about them, and help many live for God and reach heaven. On the other hand, multitudes who own me lead many to hell. / I belong to kings and queens, princes and princesses, rulers and leaders of all kinds and all classes. I represent them in all positions of life, regardless of who they are, where they are, and where they are going. Some who own me and fill high positions greatly curse the earth; others wonderfully bless the earth. Some who own me are very proud of me, and would not sell mg if they could, nor part with me, for any price that might be of fered. They would not sell me for rubies, diamonds, pearls, gold and all kinds of precious gems. I make them great, hap py and sublime, and commend them to God. However, on the other hand, other* who own me hate me. They wish they could get rid of me, but they can't. I stay with them, and will continue to do so, for the worst unless they turn to God. I can't be rejected, fought away, disowned or killed. I stay with my owner. I represent him in life, and I shall represent him in death. I cause him to shout God's prais es, or I cause him to curse God and hu manity. I make my owners happy, or I make them miserable. I don't die. I live on forever. Who am I? Do you own me and don't know me? Do I follow you every step of life's journey and yet you don't know me? Why, you hear my name called very often, and in fact you call my name often yourself. Who am I? Well, lest you don't understand who I am, or have forgotten. I declare unto you here and now, once and forever, and please don't forget?my familiar name is just INFLUENCE. One way built America. It lifts chins. Squares shoulders. Puts the gleam of confidence in a youngster's eye. , The other way offers neither challenge nor freedom. In England even now it asks little beyond submission to the regulations and "benefits" of the compulsory state. One way teaches reliance on the State, the other, self reliance. Power to you, Teocher!
