Charlotte, March 14 ■— North Carolina Republicans In conven tion today close new leaders trumpeted blasts of criticism at the Democrats, and adopted a platform calling tor a state liquor referendum and condem ing "appeals to racial prejudice embodied in FEPC." The convention passed the helm of, the party from the retiring veteran-Sim Delapp of Lexington to 3 8-year-old Jim Baley of Mad lsoc County. Candidate Named The Republicans named B. L. Gavin of Sanford as a candi f' date for the U. S. Senate from the East. George N. Pritchard of * Ashe ville, placing Gavin's name be fore the convention, nominated h)lm to run against "Dr. Prank ■ 11 .11 " Graham who has been accused of leanings too far to the left." *•' Leaden did not produce a nom inee for the Senate from the West, bnt directed Chairman Ba ley's executive committee to "consider carefully" the selection of another^ Senate candidate. (International Soundphoto) Contest Spirited Baley, a native of Greensboro, won on the second ballot in a spirited contest with Clyde R. Greene of Boone and Buford Henderson of Winston-Salem. The vote on the deciding ballot was 546 for Baley to 467 for Greene, and 1 for Henderson. On the first ballot Baley had nar rowly missed victory by 502 votes to 368, for Greene and 139 for Henderson. A majority rote was required. Luffman filled his regular appointm&nt at New Hope Church on the Brushies last Sat urday night and Sunday morning. Rev. Mr. Shore preached Sun day night. Our Sunday School attendance was down to 76, due to so much sickness in the community. Mr. Walter Marlowe, Sunday Schbol Superintendent; extends a cordial inrltation to all to attend Sunday School who do not attend elsewhere. Mr. Jonah Parker, general sec retary of Sunday School, wag very sick and ctfuld not attend church Sunday. Mr. Odell Moore, a tenor sing er in the choir, was sick Sunday and was missed at church. The ladies of New Hope Church made a beautiful quilt with names of members on each square and presented it to our pastor Sunday, who seemed to appreci ate it Tory much. Plans to raise donations to build Sunday School rooms were started Sunday with our pastor making the first donation. Rev. J. W. Moore, the choir leader, has been under the care of a doctor for the past month and could not be with us for choir practice each Sunday night, but Mr. Eugene Reavis has been di recting and can be praised for the much improvement in the singing. • Rev. Noah Hayes was a visitor to New Hope Sunday. Mr. Joe Reavis who has been very sick, was able to attend church Sunday. Rev. Noah Hayes, a former pastor of New Hope Church, will supply for our pastor the Second Saturday night and Sunday morn ijng in April. Rev. Mr. Luffman will be in a revival at that time Rev. J. W. Moore will have charge of the Second Sunday night service. Rev. Donald Reavis, a young man just starting out in minister ial work,, will preach at Ndtor Hope churchi the fourth Sunday night in March at seven-thirty. The public is invited to hear Mr. Reavis.
