----• ■ , DAVIDSON ALUMNI TO MEET HERE COACH CROWKOLL LITTLE PROP. PRONTIS JOHNSTON The North Wilkesboro-Elkin Chapter of Davidson College Alumni will hold Its annual meet ing at the Hotel Wilkes Monday Bight, April 3, according to Pat M. Williams, president of the ohapter. Professor Frontls Johnston and Head Football Coach Crowell Lit tle will speak and John L. Payne, alumni secretary, will bring greet ings from President John R. Cun ningham. The dinner, with ladies Invited, Is scheduled for the Hotel Wilkes in North Wilkesboro at 6:30 p. m. All alumni, parents and friends are inyited to attend, sending reservations to Mr.' Wil$ llama. Coach Little will discuss foot ball prospects for next fall and Dr. Johnston, professor of history, will discuss other aspects of col lege life. Included in the program will be election of new officers to replace Williams and Van Dillon, Elkin, Vice-president. Towns included in the North Wilkesboro-Blkin chapter are Wilkesboro, West Jefferson, Jeff erson, Boone, Banner EJk and Blowing Rock. Dr. Spillnum, State Officer, Baptist Dies Kingston, March 26 — Dr. Ber nard Washington Spilman, 79, for 88 years field secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention's Sunday School Board, died here at 8 p. m. yesterday after a short illness. Funeral services will be at 4 p. m. tomorrow at the First Bap tist Church, with burial in the Maplewood Cemetery. Dr. Spilman was born in Wel don on Jan. 22, 1871, the son of Bnshrod Washington and Helvla Barham Spilman. After being gra dated from Wake Forest College and attending Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville, Ky., for two years, he served pastorate* in Carteret County and Kinston. Dr. Spilman was field secretary from 1907 to 1940. He also served af Sunday School secretary for the State Baptist Convention from 1S96 to 1901, and was associate editor of the Biblical Recorder for a while with the late Josiah W. Bailey. He was a member of the board of trustees of the State Baptist Orphanage. With Dr. Hight C. Moore, he was founder of the Ridgecrest Southern Baptist As sembly. Surviving him is his second wife, Mrs. Esther Ward Spil man. A cousin, Dr. Sylvester Green of Chapel Hill, recently wrote a book entitled "B. W. Spilman, the Sunday School Man," .which will be published shortly. ^upport The Red Cross Macedonia News (By MBS. W. F. Loralne Tharpe, of Charlotte, and Britta Mae Tharpe,of Altama haw, spent a few days last week with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Tharpe and family. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Quiton and little son, Tommy of Ataaahaw, spent the week-end with Mrs. Guiton's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Tharpe. We wish to extend oor sym pathy to the John Parks family for the loss of their home by fire on Sunday morning. The Brett Oothren family had oar sympathy for the lost of their husband and father. We had very good attendance at Sunday school on Sunday, March 19. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Poplin. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Shoaf and child ren, of Winston-Salem, viilted Mrs. J. A. Showdown On Leopold Demanded In Belgium Brussels, Belgium — Premier designate Albert Deveze yester day laid down an ultimatum toN the Belgian Social Christian (Ca tholic) party: Abandon within four days attempts to restore King Leopold to the throne or face the electorate early in May. He threatened the dissoultion of Parliament if the Social Chris tians refuse to accept a "national solution" of the Belgian crisis. Ten patients were examined at the cancer center Tuesday morn ing at the Wilkes courthouse. There were eight women and two men. Nine of the patients after examination were referred to their physicians for medical at tention. In addition to those from Wilkes there were two from points outside the county. One came from Lanrel Springs and one from Deep Gap. Mrs. O. K. Whitington served as Chairman of Beceptlonlsts, and assisting her were Mrs. Joe Pear son and Mrs. Albert Garwood. Those who presided in the ex amining rooms were Mrs. Charles Zillak and Mrs. C. Monte Wil liams. 10 examinations were complet ed, and 9 patients were referred medical attention. The Center to staffed by mem bers of the Wilkes-Alleghany County Medical Society. 2 priorities were given to tho«e who arrived too late for exami nation. Examination* are free to all women 86 or over, ail men 40 or over, and to anyone with a sympton or a "danger signal," re gardless of age. .Mi The Clinics are held every Tuesday morning in the Wilkes County Court House. Registra tion is from 9:00 to 10:00. Frequently there are more ap plicants for examination than can be accommodated. Therefore, in order that those who live at dis tance may be sure of an examina tion and thus not make a trip in vain, priorities will be sent, on request, to all who live twenty miles or more from Wilkesboro. The victim was Edward Roger j Schooley, five-year-old son of Professor Blmer Schooley of High lands University, Las Vegas, N. Mex. ^ Constable L. C. Hadison said the child and his older brother,1 David, 6, were feeding the ele phants peanuts during a visit with their parents to the Rlngling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Winter quartern.
