Ray Triplett, Wilkesboro Football Star, Will Join The Carolina Squad Scored 387 Points During Four High School Seasons Ray Triplett, star member of the Wilkesboro high school's Ram bler football team which features the T-formation, will join Coach Carl Snavely's Carolina football aggregation, it was learned here today. Ray will enter The Univer sity of North Carolina this fall and ■will be a candidate for the fresh man team. Starting his football career in 1946 with the first team the Wil kesboro high school had since the beginning of World War II, Ray amassed one of the best records held by any high school football j player in the state. He was a! triple-threat man; he ran, he passed; he punted. During the four years he play ed football at Wilkesboro high, Ray scored 387 points for his team —a record any schoolboy player would be proud to make. In 1946 he scored 48 points; in 1947, as a member of the only undefeated and untied high school eleven in the hisiory of Wilkes county, he scored 69; in 1948, his number of points was 125; in 1949, he amass ed 145 points. Ray was a member or the North Carolina Shrine Bowl team and accounted for six of the North Carolinians' points. He was select-/ ed on the all-state teams picked by the Greensboro Daily News and The Charlotte News. Following the 1949 season, the following colleges and universities contacted Ray either personally or by letter with the hope of getting him to join their squads; Univer sity of North Carolina, Appala chian State Teachers College, Duke University, Wake Forest College, Clemson College, Pres byterian College, University of Maryland, University of Miami. North Carolina sums tunosu, noir-Rhyne College; Catawba Col lege. Coach Carl Snavely may well expect exceptional performance on the gridiron from the former Rambler player. Ray is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Triplett, of WHkesboro. o Loman, Davenport, Wright Leading In Flashers' Batting ' Losing streak of the North Wil kesboro Flashers during the past week was reflected In batting averages for team regulars for the season to date. Manager Bernie Loman, Dave Davenport, Bob Wright and Car ter Lentz, who recently became a regular, are the only ones to hit above the 300 mark. The infre quency of extra base hits also contributed greatly to the drop of North Wilkesboro entry in the pen nant race. The averages published below Doable Bill On ^ ? Saturday Night, One GameSonday Weather permitting, North Wil kesboro and Elkin baseball teams will clash in Memorial Park here for three games during the week end. A double bill is planned for Saturday night, with the first game at 6:30, and a single game on Sunday afternoon, 2:30. This is June 8. The season open ed May 1 and to this date North Wilkesboro and Elkin have not played a game here. Every date with Elkin here has been rained out. Fans will be eager to see these contests with the Blanketeers, who are natural rivals of North Wil kesboro and are currently in poss esson of top spot in the league. Things haven't been going so well with North Wilkesboro in the league during the past two weeks. Clybs officials and Man ager Bernie Loman have been con stantly busy in efforts to improve the club and have prospects of obtaining early results. A bat ting slump and erratic fielding costs five games in a row through Wednesday. The biggest catastrophe was on Monday night when Elkin shutout North Wilkesboro twice, 7 to 0 and 8 to 0. Mike Sheer was the pitching victim in the first game, with Roy Boles the winner, and in the second Ray Blair, formerly of the University of North Carolina baseball team, bested Bill- Ham lin. The Flashers, in the lowest ebb of a batting slump, collected only four hits in the opener and six in the last game. The official score listed six er rors for North Wilkesboro in the second but the number of bad plays was even greater. Here Tuesday night the Flash ers dropped a 7 to 2 game to Wytheville, but the game was well played. Lee Bentley hurled the game for North Wilkesboro. He exper ienced a very shaky first inning, when five consecutive drives scor ed three runs, and held the visi tors well until they scored three in the eighth. Big Bob Wright provided home fans their greatest thrill when his third hit of the game was a sizzl ing homer into the centerfield bleachers with nobody on in the ninth. Tommy Bass was the offen sive star for Wytheville with three hits and two stolen bases. He also scored three runs. Wytheville's ten hits were bunched and the Flasherte.seven were scattered from the first through the ninth and were in effective. are unofficial and incomplete, the box scores not being immediately available on a few Of the games in other towns: Tom Daddino 285 Dave Davenport 333 Pick Biggerstaff 215 Joe Subbiondo 231 Bernie Loman 328 Ed Morton — 224 Owen Childress .287 Bob Wright .. .304 Carter Lenta .310 o — Changes Made In Flashers Roster Two changes were made yester day in the personnel of the North Wilkesboro Flashers baseball team, the first in a series to be made in efforts to get the team back into the winning column. Dick Stockton, limited service outfielder, was signed to give hit ting power and add to defensive strength of the team in the outer gardens. He played his first game at Wytheville last night and col lected two hits. Stockton began his pro baseball career at Leaks ville in 1948 when Bernie Loman was manager of the Tri-City Trip lets. Last year he played for a team in Virginia and with Elkin and this year had been with the Hi-Toms of the North State lea gue before coming here. Signing of Stockton made it necessary to release one limited service player and Lee Bentley yesterday was released. Expected to arrive soon are an infielder, pitcher and outfielder. — Blue Ridge League Schedule For Week: Thursday, June 8 Radford at North Wilkesboro Elkin at Galax. Mt. Airy at Wytheville.
