Thursday night to win 3 to 2 in.
the 13th inning.
Bob Thompson did yeoman's
work on the mound and the slen
der moundsman showed little sign
of the long battle, ending the
game stronger than he started.
Bob Wright batted in all three
runs and Daye Davenport contri
buted two doubles and a single in
the 13-hit attack. In the fir»t In
ning McAlister singled and was
batted in by Osinski for the first
score of the game. In bottom half
of the first Ed Morton singled,
Davenport doubled and ||Hlght
singled both runners home to go
ahead in the score. Wytheville tied
the count in the sixth when Mai
tin singled, ' stole second and
made third when umpire Theodore
mysteriously ruled that Daven
port dropped the ball on a tag
play. He later scored on Herbert's
fly to left.
In the Hth and 12th North
WilkeBboro threatened with run
ners on second but couldn't get
the winning hit. In the 13 th with
one out Carrabus singled for
Wytheville and the side was cut
down on a dazzling double play
started by Davenport on third.
In the 13 th wit,h one out Mor
ton and Hite walked and Morton
went to third on Davenport's in
field out. Bob Wright took three
balls and then slammed the sec
ond strike into left for the win
aing run.
The game was exceptionally
well played for a long contest and
both teams were stingy in hand
ing out breaks to the opposition.
Pans were held to their seats until
ifter 11 p. m. as each inning pro
luced some exciting play.
At Wytheville Friday night
SVorth Cuthbertson bested Bill
Hamlin in a pitchers battle and
he Statesmen won 6 to 3. North
IVllkesboro got only five hits,
with Ed Morton and Dave Daven
