Three Regulars Of Flashers Are Over 300 Mark Team Batting Rising Rapidly With Arrival Of New Players Here North Wilkesboro Flashers are currently playing three in the regular lineup with batting averages of over 300 and at least two more are expected to soar above that coveted figure when they get more games into the records. Heading the list is Cart Howerton, of Greensboro, who blasted up a 44 5 average in five games here and shows little sign of dropping into any great extent. Among those who .have been with the club for some time Bob Wright has the highest mark with 34 8, having pulled up 17 points » since the last unofficial averages published in this paper. He is now the third hitter in the league among regulars for the season and is topped only by Elkin's Shorty Brown and Galax's Bob Horan. Ray Hickernell, who joined the club here last week, hasn't looked at many good pitches but hit four times in five games, including a homer and double. Meanwhile Ed Morton and Wayne Davis have, improved at the plate and their averages are on the upgrade. Dave Davenport increased his average several points in the past two weeks. Following are unofficial averages, which ar® almost complete through games of Monday night of this week: Bob Wright 348 Dave- Davenport ... 313 Wayne Davis 235 Ed Morton 248 Ray Hicknernell ... 236 Cart Howerton 445 Cecil Fogleman 270 Stan Wilcox - 292 Charlie Morant 260 John Childers 333 Dewey, Wolfe 185 Gary Thornburg 150 Old Timer Teams Of Wilkesboros To Play Friday Night Jaycees Sponsor Game For Recreational Fund In This Community Greats and near greats of the diamond in years past will don baseball togs again Friday night when Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro clash in Memorial Park in a Jaycees sponsored game for the community recreation fund. FLASHERS SLAM GALAX FOR 11-1WIN; LOSE HERE 7 TO 3 With a tremenduous display of" power at the plate the North Wilkesboro Flashers clubbed Galax unmercifully Tuesday night to win 11 to 1 in the Virginia city. Two other aspects of the game were highly encouraging. Monroe Johnson, a pitcher obtained from Statesville, held the Galax batters well in check and won easily, and fielding on the part of North Wilkesboro left little to be desired. Ray Hickernell blasted a long homer, the second since he joined North Wilkesboro late last week. Wayne Davis had three hits and thr^e RBI's and Ed Morton batted in runs regularly for a total of four. The Flashers had Galax beaten 3-1 going into the ninth and evidently decided to stay a little longer and fatten their batting averages. They scored eight times in the ninth. Here Monday night North Wilkesboro lost to Galax 7 to 3. The Leafs hit to every field and their hits hit the holes, while North Wilkesboro slammed the ball hard with uncanny accuracy into the hands of fielders. Bob Thompson started on the mound for Nortii Wilkesboro and was relieved by Charlie Morant, with Thompson charged with the loss. The Flashers left 13 runners stranded. Batting honorB went to Cart Howerton with tour hits in five trips. Ray Hickernell drew three walks and hit a double in two official trips to the plate. Bob Wright batted in two runs with a single. Tom White, pitching for Galax, was a powerful threat at the plate with a double and triple. Tuesday night's win left the Flashers eight games back of Radford and Bassett and at this late date it appears that North Wilksboro has an excellent chance of getting a playoff spot by beating out Radford and Bassett if the Flashers get the pitching. North Wilkesboro fans will get their first chance to view the Bassett team in this park Saturday night. Wytheville was two games behind on the schedule here and Saturday night's game may be a double header. Galax will play here Sunday afternoon and Mt. Airy will play here in a Tuesday night family night attraction. Baseball Scheduled For Coming Week Thursday, August 10 N. Wilkesboro at Radford. Elkin at Galax. Mt. Airy at Bassett.
