"The author goes into an examination of the
statistios of California to Ascertain her. acta 41
value to. the Country, compared with her coat
Ue gives her full credit for her gold, examines her
other resouroes, agricultural and commercial, and
comes to the conclusion that in spite of the treas
ure she has bein pouring . ao liberally into the
world's lap, she has not yet paid for herself. Mush
space is devoted to the question of her present
solvency and her future prospects, and the views
advanced are to us noveL A residence of three
years in California, in which' the author has, at
different periods,' dwelt in all its regions, from San

to apeak upon it, and he utters no half-way opin

There is a fair share ofadveatnre in his volume.

Indians, and all the mixed nations that frequent
the new State, works at the mines, both Northern
aud Southern, and gives in his experience, which,
in one case at least, is very amusing, and, iiii
short, presents a picture of the entire country ) as
be saw it. we believe the book is destined to at
tract attention. There is a freshness and naisett
abont it which removes the class of common works
of travel. "-Southern Quarterly Review. 1
' Aside from his own experience, the author ad
vances a number of statistics and general facta in
proofs of the trath and in vindication of the severity
or bis allegations. Tbe booh is very entertaining,
and will be read with great interest by every body."
Hsittmore Sun.
" The author ia a North Cskolinian. He has
written his book in a very agreeable style, and re

Baltimore dipper.
' It is well written, and cannot be read but with.
wonder and amazement. The work must have a
great run." Baltimore Patriot.
Mr Helper supports his inferences and deduc
tions by an array of facts and figures which stand
out in bold relief when contrasted with the state

we design shortly to give an extended notice of
the book, we forbear mure comment at the present
time, farther than to say that trc have also resided
for several years in the golden State," and know
personally that saost ot tbe statements made in
the book ( dismal as thev are) are briefly true."
