'. -. I JDurin Piccolomini's lave sojourn at the Spencer House,' in this city, tjhe followirg incident oc curred through a mistake, as natural as it must have been agreeable : I A young; gentleman, residing in the northern part of this State, received a Mter, last week, from his sister, who had been attending school in Kentucky, stating; that she would be on a certain day at the Spencer House where, two fiiends of hers were goinsr, and that she would look for him to arrive in good season, and -accompany her , home. , t . The brother, Alfred, came at 'once, for be had riotseen bis sister for nearly two years, having passed much of that time in 2few York, and, on arriving at the hotel,- asked for Miss and the number of her room. Hoping to sur prise her agreeably, he thought he world go up unannounced, having learned the floor and the position ofLte apartrnent. Just before he-reached the room he saw his sister, as he supposed, coming out. She, was small and plump, as when he saw her last, and thought he would conceal himself behind the wa'l of the hall-until she came opposite. , ' . . lie did so, and in another moment, a pair of little feet was fa'ling in pedal music upon the floor. She was within reach of him. It was she, of course, ' he thought, although the wavering shadows of the evening rendered objects somewhat indistinct. That little head with dark tresses, and humming . of an air always his sister's, habit made him confident. He would hesi'ate no longer ; so he extended his arms, and c'aiping the diminutive figure before uim, end bendinjr dcwn and imprint, ing three or four cordial kisses on one of the most delicious of moutha, he asked, "Don't you know your hrother, you little fogtie ?" Th 'little rogue1' looked blank with amaze ment, akid then muttering something very sweet . . but not' intelligible, slipped out of bis half-enclasping arms,. and retreated in the direction she .had come. ' Alfred now saw he must have made a mistake, and, as no one appeared, lie went t the sen ior proprietor to ; explain the awkward posi tion in which he had been placed, having; no qiiib genuine brother;- I Colonel, who was well acquainted with Al- im for bis sister. ; . ; . . ; - - u -fz" -. JFor the firs time the brother learned that ' the diminutive divinjtj was in tbe city, and Immedi ately wrote, her aa apology, paying he could . not regret what had occurred on his own account, but . would if she . desired it, on I heir's. He had no ' idea he was preasiay herPsychean HjMof the loveliest and, most ascinatbg aongstresfc in the world, and that the mistake had only takeq P ace because she was as beautiful as his sister. She bad bis most bumble apology for what bad oncurted, and if abe would not be satisfied, he would return her what be.bad taken. . "When thia note was translated to the bewitch ing Marie, and she was assured of Its sincerity, she laughed immoderately, aod iaid she had sup posed perhaps kissing' a pretty girl (here she look fy very archly) on meeting her, was an American custom. It bad frightened her at first, but sow she did not care, for said she, in ber attractive English-Tuscan, "Ze kees deed me no arm in deed it was not so dees vat you say eet ia? dees-a-gf a-ble."
