The Church Intelligenoer I
ftneE UNDERSIGNED PROPOSES TO PUB-
II LISH in the City of Rnleigi-, ta it orth Osrolina,
a weekly newspaper deigned to advance the interests
of the Episcopal Church at the South, and to diffuse
intelligence concerning its labors and its progress, in
this enterprise, he has eaon to hope for the approba
tion, and to some extent the aid of the Bishops of Ten
nessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Flor
ida, South Carolina, Forth Carolina, Texas, and the
Missionary District of the bouthwest. In each ol these
dioeeses he expects to have a resident contributor to the
columns of his iourna', wh shall give information to its
readers of any event of interest occurring in the dio
cese to which the writer belong,
The benefits of ruch a paper, if well conducted, will
be acknowledged to be great, when it U reeoilected that
in all these dioceses just enumerated, constituting in
themselves a miehty and rapidly growing empire
there is not a single newspaper expressing the senti
ments and recording the contemporaneous history of
the Episcopal Church that what is knnwn by its cler
gy and people living in this extensive and prosperous
region on these subjects is gatnerea mainly rrom news.
papers published at remote points at tne 101 ta in
which the interests of these dioceses and the especial
duties of the churchmen therein ere 'omparatively ob
score and neglected subjects. In the meantime the
principles, the past history and present condition of the
church are often misrepresented ia that region of coun
try and Stilt more frequently misunderstood, and there
is no organ and no opportunity by which, publicly and
effectually to refute sack mUprasentations and correct
sucb mistakes
By means to of a newspaper In these di -eeees, con
ducted in a religious spirit and or judiciou .principles,
the members of the church might be assisted not only
.in the general improvement of their spiritual state,
but especially in the performance of the pesuIHr du
ties imposed upon them by tbe constitution of society
In tbe southern country- duties whico lie very near
th" hearts of msey of them. ' ;
It is furthermore Intended to enrih the columns of
the paper with as tn-ny as possible of tose treasures
of thought and learning which tbe Periodical reli
gious literature of oar m ther-church is now so abun
dantly pouring forth and to give occasional views of
the state or religion and learning on tbe continent oi
Europe. . But there- is one subject closely connected
with the highest welfare, or the South to which it is
designed that this paper shall give solicitous attention.
It is the realisation, of tbe magnificent idea ef the
University of the South at Sewannee, and in order
there to the dissemination of intelligence concerning
it, and the issue of appeals in its behalf. Designed
then as tbe contemplated paper ia to effect object so
important ana so beneficent, the undersigned eonflt
dently hepee to receive the active aid of his brethren ef
the clergy and laity in the southern country. It is in
tended to give tbe paper tne name of the Church in
telligencer, and to issue the first number, if possible,
riy in marou, ioov. . -
Its terms Will be two dollars aad a naif per annum.
payable ia advance. Advertisements will be inserted
at the usual rates, ana -a liberal discount made for

will forward the naaue aad the subseritptioa -price ef

. We approve of the publication and circulation of a
newspaper for the purposes aad: ea tbe prineiples set
forth in the Prbepeetue of tbe Cburen- Intelligencer,
and we cordially reeonmend it to the elergy and laity
of our dioeeses, designing ourselves to make use of its
columns for the eonunDnioatioa of intelligence to them.
