SHELLING A DWELLING IN THE DEAD
OF NIGHT I A FAMILY DRIVEN IN
1 .
THE SNOW:! !
We are againicalled upon to note a rriost wan
ton ; and dastardly attack of the Sepoy! navy of
Lincolndom. About 2 o'clock on Thursday
morning last, says the Fredericksburg Herald,1
two Lincoln steamers ran close into "Chatterton,"
the family residence of Col. John Taylpe on the
Potomac, and fired from 30 to 40 shot and shell at
the honse, seemingly bent n its destruction.
Col. T. was rbm home, in command ojt Mb cav
alry troop, wbiieh fact was doubtless well known
to the vile miscreants. The house was occupied
at the time exclusively by no'n combatants, wo-t
men and children Mrs. Tayloe, her children
And a few lady friends on a visit.
, The attack wai of course terrifying but what
cared the miscreants I The family knew not at
what moment si shell might explode j i n their
midst, iayjng waste and'desolate, and baptizing
with their own blood their heretofore peaceful
and quiet hearthstone. As soon as possible they
-escaped yes, escaped from their own home ! some
in their nigbt clothes, and some barefooted, and
were thus fcrctd lo subject themselves jfor hours,
d uring the rigors of a wintry night, to all the cold
and inclemency of the season. 1
- Surely such vile brutality has never before been
witnesfed in any contest carried on between pro
fessedly eivihzied countries. Is it not time, high
time, that the 'chalice was returned to the lips of
the brutalized followers of Lincoln?

TSE SITUATION.
The Mobile Register says :
The enemy has landed at Biloxi on the mainland
of the Mississippi coast and is virtually in posses
sion of that village. What he bos done at Biloxi
he can repeat at any point on the coast accessible
to his gun boats. It is for our Generals comman
ding to determine when and how he is to be
fought and resisted. Ia he assailable while under
cover of the guns of his fleet, or have we to wait
until he ventures beyond the reach of his guns
into the interior. Our Generals must settle this
question, and we hope they will do it promptly.
If Picayune Butler .contents himself with his
long-shore oonquests, they will'-prove barren
enough in actual results, for, except the summer
residences on the coast, there is little else in these
sterile and thinly peopled regions to reward the
efforts ol plundering marauders. We wish we
could say as much for the moral results at the
North and in Earpe' .A successful landing on
the Mississippi main, and the capture of a "town,"
will afford ample material for a fresh ovation te
Eatler ia Boston, and beinterpreted to the preju
dice of our cause in Europe.
Biit it does not require the sagacity of a Gener
al to make it evident that these Massachusetts;
invaders should not be permitted to occupy their
position in-peace. There is a fine field for Mis
sissippi rifles,, sbiarp. shooters and active scouts all
along those parts of the coast held by the . Yan
kees. A-few light cavalry companies -eould also
do effective service in cutting off straggling par
ties, annoying the enemy's pickets, and narassing
him by every hieans known to warfare. Until
we are ready tp meet him In force, an active
partisan warfare should be carried or. We do
not believe that; Butler has a soul big enough for
any military enterprise above a Hattoraa affair .
We do not expect to see him attempt to march a
column either to New Orleans, Mobile, or Jack
son, Mississippi.! If the approaches to Mobile by
water are secure, ve shall see no Yankee troops
in Mobile this winter. After the winter is' over,
the fevers and sandflies peculiar to the climate
will be powerful auxiliaries against Northern
constitutions. But 6till the presence of these
Massachusetts invaders is an insult to the Missis
sippi soil, and D)o rest should be allowed them
while they occupy it. A cordon of light troops should
confine them toj the coast. The negro population
should be sent to the interior, and allowed . ho
communication! with the enemy. All property
available to support and comfort the enemy should
be removed or destroyed. A torch ought to have
been applied j to 'Biloxi, , and should be
applied to every village and hamlet likely to fall
into their hands. A patriotic people must be
equal to these sacrifices, so that nothing but pine
trees and sand arrens are left to our .foes
, It is to be regretted, we tbink, that there is more
than, one militajry head to the district embracing
the Gulf coasts Ifrom Florida and Louisiana.
Pensacola, Mobile and New. Orleans are alike
menaced by the; enemy. There are armies in
each of these cifies, and under one military head
they could be concentrated at either point of at
tack with celerity and certainty. With a Major
General commanding atiew Orleans, and an
other at Pensacola and Mobile, thi3 despatch and
combination, s4 necessary in military movements,
'are prevented by the necessity of previous consulta
tion and agreement. We hope the Government
will be made ware of the importance of the
faoL !
In the landing at Biloxi the citizens of Mobile
have another palpable warning that the war. bo
far at a distance from our doors, is coming home
to us. Every Federal soldier landed east of the
Pascagoula Eiver is a menace toj the safety of
tnis city. JHOQite can oe uav uetuuuou agaiua
land attack at the greatest distance from it where
the enemy can be met.
Economy in -Boots. How to make three pair,
of boots last as lone as six. and longer. The fol
lowing extract is frorn Colonel Macerone's Sea
sonable Hints', which appeared in the Mechanic'!
Magazine, dated February5 3d, 1848. After; sta
ting the utility ftf sheep skin clothing, for persons
whose employment renders it necessary that they
sbiould be much out of doors. &c. he says : .
!'I will not cjnclnde without inviting the at
tention of voar readers to a cheap and easy me
thod for preserving their leet from wet, and their
boots from wear. I have only had three pair of
boots for the iasjt'six years, (no shoes,) and I think
that I shall noVrequire any other for the next six
years to come. I The reason is, that I treat them
in the following manner I put a pound of tallow
and a half pound of rosin into a pot xmhe- fire,
and when melted and -mixed I warm the J boots
and apply the blot stuff with a painter's brush ton
til neither the sole or upper leather will suck in
any more. If it is desired that the boots should
take polish, dissolve an ounce 6f beeswax with
an ounce of turpeatineto whieh add a, teaspoonful
of Iamp-.black. A day or -two 'alter the' bdols
have been treated with the tallow and rosin, rub
over them the wax and turpentine, but not before
the fire, : Tallow or any other greeso becomes
rancid and rots the sutching as well as the leath
er, but the rosin; gives it 'an antiseptic quality
which preserves; the y hole. Boots or shoes should
be KlargQ u to adQUt of, wearing in them cork
aolea cork k s tad eondoctor of hefti." '
