Koanoke Island is. at the mouth of Albomrlo Sound, and is the; boundary lino between that and Pamlico Sound,; which the ' enffrnv's ships enter uron crossing the bar at Uai teres, Pamlico ttound is a shallow body of water on y navigable by light draft vessel, 80 miles long, and from 8 to 30 tnil broad, separated from theAtlantio by low ssjttdj.ialids, scarcely a naile wide, covered with bushes, parol ico . Son nd receives IJeuso, Tar," and Pamlico riivers. Newbern is' on the Neuse, at the junction of Trent river with it the Trent being a sort of estuary of Psmlict Sound. It is not without protection ; but it is unnecessary to say what. 4 ; j . .v . . Washington is on the Tar river, at its entrance into Pamlico rivef, at the head of navigation for s'-gping craft and Jforly miles from the tSoond. No large vessel can reach it, the water not being sufficiently deep. J r r On' the north Pamlico connects with Albemarle Sound, which is sixty miles long from east to west, and from four to fifteen miles wide. It re ceives the water of Roanoke and . Chowan rivers, and communicates with the Cheasaptake bay by the Dismal Swamp jpaftal. Eden ton is situated near the mouth of Chowan rivGi.cn Eden ton bay, which sets up from the Albemarle Sound. It is sixty-six miles fro"m jNorfolk. ! The Chowan river is farmed by the union of the Nottoway and ijeherrin rivers, which rise in Virginia and unite jabove Winton, N. C., and flowing & S. E., it enters Albemarle Sound by a wide estuary a littlei south of the mouth of the Roanoke, it is navigable for small Bail vessels to Viurfrecsborougb, on the Aleberrin braBch, about 75 miles from the ocean. Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is on the Pas quotank river, twenty miles from its entrance into Albemarle Souiid J lorty miles S. S. W. of Norfolk." Vessels drawing seven' feet of water come up to Elirabeiih City, which communicates with Uorfoik with water via the' Dismal Swamp Canal. The reader jorcei ves the extent of water com munication the eneiijy will command should he get r osseasion of the two Sounds, with' boats of Ugpt dralt. KoanoKe Island commands toe en? trance to Albemarle Sound. There is a force theie, how large, orj how defended, we are unable to say ; but we imagine it will have to Abandon tha place should the enemy make a demonstration upon it with his! large naval fow. - General Wise has been appointed to command that place and all North of it and South of Norfolk. He bag been only recently aj pf inted, aud has not 3 et left this city, j General Branch, of North Carolina, commands the district next below Al bemarle Sound, incfudingPamlico. He has been, it is said, taking the most vigilant rnoaeures for ihe defence of the towns and coast in his, dis trict. , . j' " ' , ; Murh apprehension exists in the towns reached by the Sounds. We bave a brief dispatch from Murffeesborough, which states that the militia of the county (Hertford) bad been: called out in consequence of tha appearance of' the Burnside expedition on the coast. It states that the noto rious C. H. Poster was guiding the fleet. The occupation of Roanoke Island by the ene my, will very much interrupt the transportation ot supplies to Norfolk. But there can be no dan ger of an attack upon Norfolk from that . direc tion, we imagine. ' It is to be Doped that if the now famous Burn side, who, like all expeditionary Yankee Generals, is reported to be irresistible before be sets sail, really intends to beat up tne quarters ottnsHortn State, that he will have courage and pluck to leave bis ship and give our soldiers a fair shake. Nothing would be more agraeabla. With such an extent of frontier, and no navy, it would be silly to expect or hope that no landing could be e Seated by our exeuiable invadeis. But when they do land, all that we ask is that they may penetrate into the country, and let us see what stuff tbey are made of. An invading army should do no less than this, and to do less betrays either a want of confidence in themselves or a dread of .our soldiers. Speculation as to the purpose of Burnside will no doubt soon be ended by the fact of bis pro ceediogs. Richmond Dispatch. ; ..si. ' Waknin6 to Skctf DiPPKRd.
