BATTLE OF PRESTONSBURG. AN INTERESTING ACCOUNT. Although the following letter has from some derangement of the mails been delayed to this late day, yet there are some facts contained in it which have not heretofore been made public, and which will be found interesting to the reader. 1 Richmond. JJispaIch. Camp on Bkatxr Caxuc, l , 54th Reg't Va. Vols., Jan. 12. f Editors of the Dispatch : The first brigade cf I the Army of Eastern Kentucky, under the com- mand ot uen. ii. aiarsnan, engagea me enemy on the 10th inst., at Middle Creek, io Floyd coun ty. The enemy's forces were commanded by Col. Garfield, from Ohio ; and I understand was somposed .of two Ohio regiments, one Indiana regiment, and a Kentucky regiment the latter under the command of Col? A. Moore. The trength of the enemy is x estimated at from four thousand to forty five hundred men. Our brig- 4tb,) Col. Mooro'fl battalion ; Col. William's Kentucky regiment, and Capt. Jennea's Battery of four field pieces. The whole force on our 6ide, including sick, did not amount to over twenty two hundred men! The force engaged on the day of the battle was about one thousand strong. Col. Trigg's regiment not being engaged, but held in reserve to protect our bnttery. Col. Moore's men and those of Col. Williams's were first assaulted by the enemy at one o'clock, their commands having first been deployed as skirmishers across the crest o I a moun tain, the battery being placed in a narrow defile, so as to command the entraco to the narrow val ley in our front, and which was held by the ene my. .The enemy attempted to storm the height, upon which Col. Moore and Col. Williams were placed, for the purpose' of turning our battery, but were three times repulsed and driven back by the girilant and brave men under their command. The battle lasted from one to six o'clock P. M., and w'it,h ihe exception of about twenty minute9, raged with unabated fury. Both parties fought with great energy until darkness closed in, and the enemy, seeing Col. Trigg's Regiment advance for the purpose of reinlorcing our men, retired from the He'd. The enemy sheltered himself be bindapine thicket, and from which he could not bo dislodged by the men opposing him. Gen. Mar shall ordered Col. Trigg to reinforce Williams and Moore, and to drive the enemy from the pine thicket. Col. Trigg at once marched his Rngi meni to the top of the mountain, and selected the "Montgomery 7th" and a company commanded by Capt. Burwell Akers, from Floyd county, and placing them under the command of Capt. James C.Taylor, directed him to perform the bloody job. The enemy, however, abandoned the point before Capt. Taylor reached it, and gave up tbe field. Our loss in this engagement summed up as fallows : Uf Colonel Moore's men, five were killed and six wounded ; of Colonel Williams's men, six were killed and seven were wounded. The loss of the enemy could not bo less than three hunered. A gentleman has just arrived from l'rostonsburg, who reports that they lost, in killed, wounded, and mi36ing, one thousand men. Wo are informed that theyiuimedialely retreated back to Paintville, and thore reported that they had lost but one man killed and two wounded. Their report is false, and calculated to deceive ihir own people. Uur position was snch as to enable us to overlo k them, and it makes my heart ncLe when I thuikol the number of human souls who wero hurried into eternity on that day. It is no disparagement of their bravery for me t record the above facts: fjr 1 must say .they fought long and fought, well, but certainly per sisted in what they could not accomplish i. e., to drive us from our posmon. We had been falling back from Painlsville for several days, be We learn that it is the in ten tion of the inventor, Mr. Utley, of North Carolina, to make Borne further improvement upon! the gun, which being completed, he thinks wijl render it a maner piece of artillery. jVbrbffc Day Book. j : CONGRESS 1 OF THE CONFEDERATE ' STATES. . f SENATE. B. ROOT. i: USE chtshaK'S yeast powders cause we could not subsist our men ; and they, 1 suppose, conceived tbe idea that we were retreat ing Irom them. But to tneir sorrow did tney find themselves mistaken, when they encountered us. If we had had one meals' victuals for our men, we would have driven them back with grea. slaughter, but, owning to tbe great scarcity of supplies here, General Marshall has been com pelled gradually to witndraw iromtne . country. Our men had been compelled to subsist upon five meals in seven days whan the fight commenced, and many of them fought that day who had not had a mouthful to eat for twenty-four hours. In order to subsist this Brigade, Gen. Marshall is compelled to daily detail men ironu-his command to go into the corn fields, to shuck ihe corn, shell it, carry it to the mills, have it ground, and then to pack it on horseback, to the men. .. The roads were awful, the country barren and mountainous. I have olten seen the General in ihe mud superintending the movement of his wagons, and so bad are the roads that he can rarely ever move over from two to three' miles per day. I therefore assert the proposition that it is madness and folly to keep, or attempt to keep, this command here any longer it cannot be subsisted, and unless tbe War Department intends to sacrifice our health and lives to no purpose., it should speedily withdraw us from here. We are worn out with exposure and toil. Humanity Bays let us return. Yours, &c, Vkto. SUDDENLY WALKED UP. Not long ago, there was published in this pa per a revolutionary reminiscence, wherein allu sion was made to the sufferings of Geo. Greene's army, in the early struggle for independence, foi tbe want of suitable clothing, which in many in stances rendered the men unfit for service. It chanced that a copy of the paper fell into the hands of a wealthy citizen of Alabama, who had previously resisted all the appeals of patriotism to his purse. We don't know h w it cp,ened that he put such a novel interpretation Uion the revolutionary article, but after be got through he exclaimed, "By Jove 1 that will never do in the world !" So he collected together a considerable quantity of clothing and other article! requisite for toe comfort ot tne soldier, ana packing tne whole securely, directed tbe box to "General Greene of the Confederate Army" and started it otf to Richmond. It arrived here in due lime, and as a matter of course the depot agent was somewhat puzzled to find General Greene " but it was finally turned over to ih military author ities, who distributed the contents where it was needed. Whether1 the Alabamiah had be in asleep ever since the revolutionary war or not, we don't undertake to say; but we give him cre dit for doing a good thing, ven though we could not help laughing when we heard the story, w Richmond Dispatch. x ...
