SATQRDAT MORNING, MARCH 8, 1862, NOTES OF THE WAR., It will doubtless interest oar readers to know what the Yankee newspapers say of the Southern soldiers who have been receatlv cantared in bat- tie. - - T - 7 I - A correspondent of the New York World, writing of the Fort Donelson affair, holds forth ai follows : THI PRISONERS. 'If the prisoners which have fallen into our bands are to be regarded' as a fair sample of the southern army, they are indeed a pitiable lot ef wretches. The officers are men of some little refinement, but the rank and file ate only like so many white serts. , The hiatha between the pri vates and Officers corresponds to the gap in social lie oetween toe negro owning aristocracy and the poor white trash benighted, ignorant and uncouth far beyond expectation, even for the most rural of inhabitants. : - Their appearance as thev even marched on board of the transport presented a picturesque as pect, a. lavorite and common substitute lor blankets is a strip of showy carpeting. White blankets and the uniform, home made, butternut colored jeans, is the costume of the privates and some of the Colonels They have little or nothing else but the Confederate bonds and Tennessee shin plasters : gold and silver is all boarded. They affect great surprise when told that this i currency is wonuiees witu us. An conversation a- .t-i l -r , 1 ' i with many of oar officers they straneely found themselves agreeing with them on alt the main questions which, brought about the wat, and. seemed but ltitle inclined to believe that the war is not being made . one of eman cipation. These men will fight It ia one of the few things they bare learned. It is of 410 use to say that they have not the physical courage of their race, but they cannot be a match for the giant minds of the North and West. They re port the strength of the. garrison in the fort at about twenty thousand; seven thousand of them; have escaped. About eighteen hundred cavalry got out by land through our lines. The Roanoke Island correspondent of the New York Herald has probably a better claim to the title of "gentleman" than the vulgar blackguard who penned the foregoing. Describing the ap pearance of the prisoners, he says : Their qiforms are of the most miscellaneous character, and vary in color from a dark- blue, through all shades, to a dingy gray, like an Irish man's frieze. A. dark pepper and salt color,now- ever, is tne most prevalent one ine designa tion of rank is effected with every; modification of style, fiom a full dress gold sleeve braid down to a home-made tinselled shoulder strap, while the stripes on their pants are of broad and narrow gold fringe, blue velvet and black cloth. A gau dy display is quite marked. The caps are of every pattern, from regulation through all the degrees of sou' westers, slouches, sugar loayes, &c., with a spinkling ol others like those worn by the historic Mississippi gambler and Texan ranger. The regiment of each is indicated bv brass letters and figures on the cups, thus W V 1 VI S VS JWWaVB I J V X V "31," "Miss," "Ga," &c. As a general thing they are very intelligent and gentlemanly men, particularly those of the Wise Legion and North Carolina troops. The rank and file of the prisoners present still more diversified appearance. For the most part they are low eized, stunted, sandy complex ion, hardy leiiows, attired in coarse but comfort ble uniforms of gray jean cloth. The Virginians!, hdwever. form an exceDtion. Thev preserve gentlemanly effeminacy, not disguised Dy, the ex posure of camp life, and affect a better .style 01 uniform and dress. The accoutrements were of the most primitive pattern and quality. The haversacks were made of coarse canvass or tent cloth, with large bone buttons, the belts and etraps of cowhide, kin and grain leather, while new-born southern industry was evidenced in number ot roughly cast leaden buttons: In blankets they were well provided, but a want of homogeneity in size, color, and texture betrayea that they were not of C. S. A. furnishing, but had been brought from home by the men them selves. THE SURRENDER OF NASHVILLE. It appears that the city of Nashville was1 sur rendered to the enemy, by Mayor Cheatham, on Sunday, ths23dult. The Memphis Avalanche, Of the 26th, has the following account of the trans action : It is true that the Federals had not previously entered the city, but a regiment of Federal caval ry were encamped in the town ot JSageflela, snort distance from Nashville. It was to this point that Mayor Cheatham re paired, and formally tendered the city, with all the public stores it contained, to the commander of the Federal forces. ' The Federals seemed loth to believe that the city bad really been lrrenderod, and accordingly onlv sent over fifteen men to take possession and even these seemed to be on the lookout for sur prise of some sort. There was a large amount of bacon and other armv stores in the citv of Nashville, and CoL Forrest, of thia city, was engaged up to Bunday afternoon attending on the saving and transporta tion of the same. ( While engaged in this service Mayor Cheatham opposed, and told him to desist, be having formally given tip the same to the Fed eral officer. Those of us who know Col. Forrest can well imagine what his reply would be to such. an order. He tola tne mayor taat ne ranaea au officers then in the city: that he was a Confeder ate officer, and that if he did not desist from in terfereoce, lie would take force. Subsequently lot of low fang characters about the city com menced a series of depredations upon private pro perty, and the May or being powerless to repress them, it is reportea ins. uoi. .c orresi wok a ae tachment. and, meeting them in the publio square, killed fire of them, before they were dis- persea. It is, perhaps, the first city of such size, and containing! such a large amount of alauble stores , that was ever surrendered, under such dream stances, to such an considerable force. ' , The Memphis 'Appeal, of the 27th says : ! Thirty of the enemy's plcketsv stationed oa th Murfreesboro jvad, a f ew miles from Nashville, were taken by Capt. Morgan's Kentucky cavalry company on Monday , night lasi: This company had secreted themselves in the city, and took the pickets by surprise as soon as they assumed their position. V-Wte.-ZJi A large proportion of the respectable citizens of Jtfaahville had left before it was surrendered. ! Three fourths of the Government property and military stores are thought to have been saved.
