B. ROOT. , USE CB SHAN'S YEAST: POWDErBS SATURDAY MORNING, MAY U, 1862. THE SCALES PALLING FROM THEIR '.- eyes: . . ... .. . , A great many good men hare been deluded by the cry in the North that toh war was a war for the Union." Linooln'i despotism, however, is fast removing the scales from their eyes, and the abolition of slavery in the District of Colombia, the riullificaton of the fugitive slave law by Con gress, and the emancipation designs of Mr. Lin coin upon the border slave States is beginning, nice medicine, to effect its good work. The plftjim At Uet booming to ratlin the real object f? the North in waging-this - war, and to see tat ail this cry about the Union is a miserable chEL The Maryland Beacon, hitherto a strong UrJion paper, deserts the Lincoln cause with the follow ing parting compliment : ' We of Maryland have been enlightened a Utile too late ; but at las' that the war is waged, not raaiiily for the restoration of the Ur.ion and the honor of the old flag, but chiefly for .he alx lition of slavery. Intoxicated for the moment by tie soul-stirring cry of "war for the Union," we have assisted to rob tha people of the District of Columbia, and to render valueless our own slave interest. I 'The scales have at last fallen from our eyes, and we see now no longer through a glass, dark ly. We have been brought to realize that "our patriotic President" is omething worse than a promise breaker, and that the Union is a mise rable cheat. We may not now avoid the rain which is upon ourselves ; hut it still remains in our power to withdraw our sanction from, a war which, it is now manifest, is waged against the Cooked era le States irdm vindictive motives and mainly for the extirpation of Slavery wherever it exists. That the voice of Maryland may be rendered as effec tive as possible against the further prosecution of such a war, and against all emancipation schemes, whether they come from Lincoln or his allies in this State, we advocate the ignoring of all past issues and the formation of a party sufficiently comprehensive and broad bottomed to embrace the whole an ti-abolition sentiment ot our State." "JOHN" AT SHILOH. Major Henry E. Peyton, who, from services in the field at Manassas, was promoted from a pri vate in tbe Loudoun cavalry to General Beaure gard's staff, took with him to Corinth his body servant John, who had been his playmate in childhood. When the army marched to Shi lob. John was left at Corinth. But on Sunday, after the battle was over, John turned up myste riously, having come, as he said, to "look after Mars Henry.'' As soon as he found his master the following colloquy ensued : ' "Mars Henry, dar is a. Yankee horse bin kill ed, and it Y.li ffiCT,AninM arwr nd leu as nnis saaaie ana oridle you never see Spose'n I and you take um befo' anybody else kin." Major Peyton, after consulting wflh some of nis Droiner omcers.toia John to go and take them. Not long afterward John returned and said : Mars Henry, dar's a ole mule got loose in de woods, and presently some body ewine come loner dar and steal him. Now SDose'a 'I and vou take him and put we all's saddle and bridle on him." 'Very good " said the Mior. and awav went John. Sunday night passed, and no John was to be found. The battle rared all day Monday, and still John was not visible. Our army retired slowly to Corinth without ansymptoms of John. xne Major couia not nefp smiling at his own sim- , : : . : ! . ? He had also to receive tbe ironical compliments of his fellow officers. Two days elapsed, and all hopes of ever seeing John again were dismissed, when Major Drent's boy came running in, exolalmlng: "Major Peyton's Jobn.comm' up de road." Everybody ran out to see him. The first thine: that attracted their attention was the brand u . S. on the shoulder of an enormous mule. On this mule was a large sack stuffed so full that it stood straight out half a yard on each side of the mule; and on this sack sat John with a large trunk in front ot him. A shout of applause greeted him as be dismounted. The booty in the sack and trunk proved to be very rich. . Shoes, socks, shirts, woolen under clothing, sardines, india rubber blankets, oil cloth havelocks, two splendid overcoats, a' variety of tools, and a full uniform of a Yankee general. The saddle, bridle, the two overcoats and an india rubber blanket John gave to his master; the oth er things be kept for himself. When Major Pey ton heard that most ot tbe plunder came from that part of the Yankee camp which our troops neglected to burn, be was entirely reconciled to John's performance. John now parades the streets of Corinth dressed as a Federal general, and is held up to the 6ervaoti of the Major's brother of ficers as a model.- DESTITUTION OF THE A3TIZANS OF BELGIU M. Till RJnl.n T i yt ien. XKJ mm the Generals commanding territorial divisions, Generals of infantry and cavalry, and to all the chiefs of corps, the following circular : BBU88JCLS, April 8, 1862. Gentlemen : The tear in America has produced an. unfortunate crisis ia the cotton manufactures of all countries. The town of Ghent has, in par ticular, suffered much from that crisis, and it is urgent t assist the numerous and brave workmen by demarding of public charity resources which the deficiency of work has completely dried up. I have thought that the army would be disposed to lend its assistance to any measure that would tend to alleviate those sufferings; and ia order to enable each to bring his offering to tbe gallant army of labor, I "have decided that in each garri son possessing a band of music arrangements shall be made for organising a concert, the product of which shall be applied to tbe assistance of tbe working population of Ghent.
