T. W. ROYSTON, A CO., ; - , No. 61 'Sycamore St, au i'l Afk Petersburg, Va. t 1&M Register. . i - - ' - WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 28, 1862. AN INTERESTING COLLOQUY. The Richmond correspondent of the Charleston Courier, in his last letter G) that journal, writes as fallows : I have had an interesting interview with an officer of oar army, who was recently within the orietny's lines, and who conversed freely with their most prominent commanders. He says General McClellan, and indeed, most of the old army officer?, tire coaiteous and gentlemanly : but i lie material ot jvmcD toeir iouowers is composed, is repulsive, dissolute, vulgar, obscene and blas phemous. Their inBolent bearing towards the Surgeons who went under flag of truce to attend upon oar woui-ded after the battle of Williams burg, would infamously adorn the coo duct ot Presidium Gaffrard's black minima. They alleg ed that our troops mutilated their dead insulted and bunted their wounded ; and, in reia'iation, they propose holding our Surgeons as hostages ? To the perpetration of soflagrantan outrage, the latter dauntle9sJy defied ih?m. "Tell me, Dictor," said an upstart political General, "how you ac count for the brutality! with which your people treat our wounded and dead?'' "Upon the gr.mnd, sir," replied the Surgeon, "that your peo ple are ungrateful incapable of telling jtae truth and that your leaders have to stimulate fero city as a .substitute for truth." -What! da you mean to deny the truth of my representations? ' i said t'-e vandal. "I mean to assert, sir, that they i are palpable lies," was the rejoinder. My infor mant represents Gen. V ool as being bordering upon dotage. He is absent-minded and rambling in his speech, vacillating and foolish in decision. McClellan, he adds, is much overrated as a com mander ; but polite and magnanimous. He free ly confesses that the abolition - opposition to htm is very great. Of our Generals he spoke in the highest terirs. Beauregard and Joe Johnston he called great men ; Early and Longstreet, he add ed, were stubborn as twin devils; and Gen. G. W. Smith he called his warmest personal friend. "His talents," he added, "are allied to genius. Under circumstances of adversity, he will rise above them grandly. 'When the interview came to a close the last words of McClellan' were, "Farewell I I hope we shall soon meet in peace and harmony." "Did . you say on the Qhicka hominy?'.' responded my friend. Soon aftar, the latter was introduced to the wife and daughter of one of the Federal Generals. They closed their doors and embraced htm ; avowed .themselves secessionists; cut the Confederate buttons as kep sakes, off the sleeves of his coat. They asked him to implore the Confederates to flglit to the death and in deaths for that, if subjugated, the condition of Brazilian slaves would We preferable td their fate.' "You can whip these Tankers," they added enthusiastically. "You whipped them the other day, at Williamsburg; you can whip ibem everywhere but on water; retire from their j gunboats and you will drive' them back in rout a- d defeat they feel it." As a confirmation of this opinion of tie ladies, Gen. Hancock told one of our officers that ha never saw such brilliant fighting as that of the Confederates at Williams burg, "Immortality," he said, "shjuld be in scribed upon' the banners of the 5th North Caro lina and 24th Virginia Regiments. " "They fought like heroes," interposed an English officer, "and the bearing of the Confederate cavalry was splendid equal to anything that even have ever seen." "Ah, yes," said Hancock, "with such in fantry and cavalry, when we are one people again, we can whip the world." "But one people we never gain can be," said the Confederate. "I suppose, Doctor," asked Heintzelman, "you call the result at Williamsburg a Confederate victo ry ?" "Certainly how many men did your divi siou lose there?" "About two thousand." "At the smallest calculation, then, your total loss in killed and wounded must have been over 3,000 ; you have all of our wounded, twenty or thirty excepted, in your hands ; they do cot number four hundred ; and the ratio in kilred. cannot ex ceed one-third that number ; your papers admit that you had 30,000 men in action, who assailed about five thousand of our retreating army ; with this number you were beaten back witn great lo-s ; wa have four hundred of your prisoners ; and yet you shout victory. Such victories will never conquer the South. I wonder why your neoole cannot affora to look facts in the face, and tometimes speak the truth 1" "Oh 1" exclaimed the frank Englishman, "we cannot afford to con fess defeat even in a skirmUh. The people of the North won't brook that. Such a confession would cost the best of us his commission." "I pity people," responded the Confederate, ''who require such false and artificial stimulants, as would do dishonor to the vanishing courage pf Bob Acres. THE CONFEDERATE STEAMER SUM TER ARRIVAL OP HER OFFICERS IN ENGLAND. ; The London Star, of April 19, contains the fol lowing : Among the passengers by the Mooltan, which arrived at Southampton on Thursday with the Australian mail, was Captain Semmes, the com mander of the Confederate man of war Sura ter, whose daring achievements in the Caribbean Sea have attracted such attention. After capturing and deslroyiog almost a fleet-of mercbart ship ping among the. West India Islands and in the South Atlantic, the Sumter escaped to Europe, and there .immediately commenced destroying Federal shipping in tbe British Channel and in the Bay of Biscay. Captain Semmes is a small, thin, but wiry man, with a weather beaten countenance, of a most de termined looking character. Although not by any means an old man, his moustache and beard are quite white. He was very anxious to know whether the Confederate army had fought any great battle after retiring from Manassas, and what progress the Federals had made at the mouth of the MississiDDi. Among his baggage was an immense trunk, filled, it was rumored, with booty selected from captured ships. Captain Semmes ia related to Mr. Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President. The other officers of the Sumter were also on board the Mooltan. They appeared very Trnnncr The Gibraltar Chronicle of the 11th of April says : "The crew of the Confederate States steam er Sumter is being paid off. It is reported that the officers will return to England and the vessel Ko n n I Via nfficAn to hODl this State- mnt was mvntinnAd. deniea its-truth as to the sale of the ship; but beyond this contradiction, and the statement that the Sumter remains at Gibraltar in charge of one or two officers, nothing could be elicited from them ; they being, of course, very nnrvOmn.nnicative as to the future movements either of themselves or their ship.
