The question being up on certain amendments recommended by the In ternal Improvement Committee. , Mr. Waddell spoke in favor of the bill, and went into the history of the Coal and Iron inter est of the Deep River country, and argued to show that no better investment could be made by. the State, so far as dividends are concerned, but that it would materially contribute to the devel opment of the great mineral wealth of the Deep River Valley. Lee who figured so conspicuously and effectively at the late battle of Vicksburg, is Stephen D. Lee, a native of South Carolina, who was 1st Lieutenant in the 4th regiment of U. S. Artillery before pur present troubles, but who promptly left that ser vice and cast his fortunes with' his native South. Gen. Lee has been recently appointed to the office he now holds.
