A GENERAL VIEW; F AAlERlCAN AGRICULTURE. CHAPTER L THg POSlTtO.1 OF AXEBI.CAN FARMERS. Skitiox I- Every one that eats bread, or wears cioth made of wool, cotton, or flax, bas a direct personal int. rest in the results of Tillage and Farm Economy. Hunger and nakedness are wants of the ino3t press lug character, and providence has placed tbcm alike iu every human being. In civi lized communities all are equally dependent on successful agriculture lor the wans of subsidence. Let the soil be permanently exhausted, or fail hut for a year to reward the labor of the husbandman, and no langu ije can adequately describe the intensity of tbe universal siiff. ring that must ensue. Hej.ce this tr im b of the national iiiouetry has peculiar and paramount claim lo Ihe earnest attention aud llu-fostering care of all fovertiments winch are regardful of the public safety, and sustained by common sense. American agriculture offers for consider itioa several interesting i (-. tnrei. rrominent autonjf these is the fact, ik.l nA.rlu tlir. a fi.llrllia t( tllP l;ihir and 1 11 . k ii, a i ' . i.vw iu.i" - - - capital of the country are employed in this single pursuit. Agriculturists -re ihemsel vts a large uiajotity of the voters, taxpayers, ami consumers of all domestic and foreign guOds Under their republican system, they are j tnaiuU r SDoniibl,; for the gool guverument of each Stale, and of the Union. If their public servants, wbetbrr in Congrss or Sule Legislatures, fail to promote improve Bents in agriculture as recomti ended by President Washington, the f-ult is not in their representatives, but in fiose who ne-jlt-ct to ask fin: such aid as government may properly grant. American farners enjoy advantages su perior lo those of other nation.-, for improv ing both themselves as a class, and tber lan ded estates, upon the highest capabilities ol an, and of the earth winch he cultivates Thi TfMiiihiic nroffers to rural art and rurj! science more than one tlmuiand millions ol cres of available farming lands ; of which u little or as much may be subdued and im proved as wisdom shall diclate. Ttiere is neither compulsion nor restraint in either direction. With this entire freedom of ac tion is a.-s-cialed a degree of security for Kfe, liberty, properly, toleration of religion nd exemption from onerous taxes, without a parallel in the liis4ory of ihe world. In extent of sea-coast, facilities for river, L.ke and canal navigation, lor variety ol climate, soil, vegetable and animal pro ducts, for indefinite and almost unlimited commercial, manufacturing, mineral and hy draulic resources, no other country equals nil. There is some danger, however, that we shall prove unworthy of so great blei'S ing that we may forget the source whence t-ey come abuse the peculiar advantages and the exalted privileges which we possess, aud blindly cling lo the barbarous practice of impoverishing Ihe soil, lo the incalcula ble injury of coming generations. Instead of exhausting millions of acres without any dequale recompense, instead of looking longingly t the wilderness of forest and prairie at the Wert, we should search close 1 into the lands already under tbe plough, nil learn what can be done to add two or Ibree or four fold to iheir present produc 'iteness. The time bas at lart ar,iv. d when it is indispensable to the continued prosper ity of all the older Stales, I hat ihe principles Wh of renovating and exhausting cultiva ted fields be thoroughly and-universa!ly un. derstood. Sectin H A few facts about soil, plants. d animals. Soils contain, as a general ibiiig, not more lhan one part in a thousand of the atoms, in an available condition. Wbicll u:"nre consumes in forming a crop of any kind. This statement exore?ses a fact of rreai practical importance ; for the husband 'g of these fertilizing atoms i the first step awards arresting the impoverishment of Ihe ertli. It is the mat'er in the soil, which na kes crops in one arrangement of its at- oros, and forms manure in another condition j1' the same atoms, that the farmer should 'earn to preserve from waste and loss. Soils of dirTerenl degrees of productive "cs, where their mechanical texture aud Physical properties arealike, always contain "Hike quantities of the food of crops- It Kem to make little difference how small ,s the amount of the lacking ingredient in composition of cultivated plants. Its --""" T TM -m--m-mSmZmmmmmm T T ', ' ' ' i . ' ' TT Ar TTI wn WW -1 '. ' ' ' r , mm hi absence is fatal to theiurther crowth of the crop, after us appropriate aliment fails in the soil. It is easy to discover the wisdom of this universal law. Suppose Nature should organi te grass, grain, and other plants which serve as tbe daily food of all the high erpfders of animals, as well without bone earth (phosphate of lime) as with that ruin, ral, would it be possible for uch grass and grain to yield to the blood of domestic ani mals, and to that of man himself, that solid earthy matter which imparts strength to hu man bones, and to those of oxen, horses, sher-p, and swine T Certainly not. A. houph iron is always present in the ool arid.bIool of animals, no farmer ever killed a calf, a pig, or an ox, which had iron for the frame of ils system. No anatomist ever saw a bone in the body of a person formed of other earthy atoms than such as Provi dence had fitted for this peculiar function in the animal economy. Tho brains and muscles of all animals contain both solphur and phosphorus as constituent elemei ts. If their daily food, derived as it is from the soil, lacked either sulphur or phosphorus, must not this radical defect in their nourishment soon i;;duce weakness ami disease, and finally result in premature death ? To prevent consequen ces m disastrous and so obvious, nature re fuses to orirniz plant- without the presence in the soil, in an available form, of those pe culiar atoms adapted alike 10 the wants nf vegetable and animal vitality. This wise provision should be carefully studied by ev ery one who desire? lo enjoy sound health, and a long and happy life. Most of "the ills that flesh is heir to," as well as most of the maladies of plants, have their origin in the violation of nature's laws. The growth arid constitutional vigorof all living beings, not less than the revolution of the an h on its axis, are governed by immutable laws. One of these appears to be, that an atom of carbon (charcoal) shall not perform the functions of an atom ol uon ; nor can an atom of iron perform the office of an atom of carbon, or that of anv ott er element concerned in the organism of pliinis aud animals. There are only some fifteen kinds of elementary bodies used by nature in forming every vegetable and ani mal substance, produced on the farm, in the orchard, or in the g irden. The science of Rural Economy consists in 1 the Fysit-maiic study of Atoms, aud of the Laws by which they are gov me!, whether they exist in solid or crumbling rocks, in loose earths, in vegetable or ainiunl mould, in fermenting manure, in the living tissues and eel It) of or-aniz) d beings, or in the form ol invisible pas s diffused through the atmos phere. Every product of agricultural labor is either a vegetable or an animal substance; and in ils production not an atom of new matter is called into existence. In the lan guage ol science, all matter which is neither vegetable nor animal, including air and wa- - -. 1 - -- k.r ol ids, like sand, clay and lime; or liquids, like water ; or ga.es, like common air. Tbe farmer deals largely with atoms in each of these forms; be nee be should be familiar with the several sciences which treat of na tural phenomena as witnessed in the mine ral, veei table, and animal kingdoms. He sllou, know that plants alone can subsist on mineral, or elisor uamzed fi'O.l that there were no plants in the ocean nor on land, neither marine nor land animals could have a being. In the absence of all vegeta tion, it is obvious thai all animals- must be carnivorous, or cease to consume organized aliment. Being wholly dependent on mu tual destruction for Hie means ol subsistence, every day would diminish the aggregate supply of food ; and the last animal would soon die of starvation. From the above reasoning it is plain lhat vegetable lil is iM r on this planet than annual life ; and that plants may have flour, ished thousands of years before ihe lowest type of a being which deieiided wholly on organized food for subsistence was created. It will i.lso he seen thai ihe line of demarca tion btween animals and plants is well de fined, by the fact that the latter can organ ize the elements of all vegetable and ani mal substances into these compound bodies, which the former cannot do. All plants produce and increase organized matter ; all xiiimal- consume and diminish ihe quautily of organized loud. FRANKLIN INSTITUTE. CEDAR ROCK, FRANKUN COUNIV, N- C.
