A Repository of fcketches, including t.culiar American Character and Scenery and Rural Sports. By T. B. Thorpe, of Louisi ana, author of "Tom Owen," "The Bee Hunter," "Mys teries of the Backwoods," &c. One neat vol., l'2mo., with illustrations. The reading public, especially of the West and South, have become familiar with the writings of the author of this very pleasant volume, liis characteristics are great clearness and simplicity of style, close observation of na ture and character, and a certain dry humor f descrip tion, which is especial y captivating. His sketch of "Tom Owen, the Bee Hunter," is an excellent illustration of his felicity in this regard ; and his picture of ' Wild Turkey Shooting," is another "case in point." The fact is the writer is an artist, and that in writing, as in painting, a picture is always before him. For sale by II. D. TURNER. North Carolina Book Store. Raleigh, June 1354. n29 tf. The subscriber proposes to open, on the second Monday in January next, in the City of Raleigh, a High School for young ladies, under the above title. For this purpose, he has purchased the property form ed owned, and employed for school purposes, ny the late Rev. J.J. Finch. It is situated .on Halifax street, a few hundred yards north of the Capitol, in a pleasant and desirable part of the city ; sufficiently near,to enjoy all the advantages of the city, and sufficiently retired to be free from most of its annoyance. He has purchased also an unimproved lot, in the same vicinity, one ot the most eligible and beautilul sites in the city, upon which he intends, as soon as circumstances will admit, to erect large and commodious buildings with special reference to school purposes. Many circum stances conspire to render Raleigh a most desirable location for a female school. lis proverbial healthfulness ; the objects of interest, which attach to it, as the cnpitol of the State; its accessibility by means of rail-roads ; the high character of the institutions it already contains ; and its growing importance, giving promise of permanent pros- Ecriiy, are all cireums-tnnces which cannot be overlooked y parents, desiring to give their daughters a polite and an accomplished education. The subscriber will be assisted in the duties of the school by Mrs. McDowell and other competent and experienced instructors; and all the facili ties necessary to a first class school, will be promptly provi ded. The course of instruction will be thorough ; embracing all the branches usually taught in High Schools or Col leges, and diplomas will be granted to those who com plete the cour.-e. Certificates of graduation will also be given in Music and oiher Ornamental Blanches, to those who attain the requisite protii iency. The sessions ;md vacntions will be arranged to corres pond as nearly as practicable with those of Wake Forest College, in order that parents patronizing both Institutions, may have the advantage of sending their sons and daughters' together. TERMS TEK SESSION. Primary Department, $10 Preparatory Do. 15 Classical and Scientific Department, 2.") Music on Piano and Guitar, including the use ol In strument, 25 Other Ornamental Branches at the usual prices. Board including washing, fuel, Sec, 60 Contingent Expenses, Payable promptly at therend of each session. No deduction lor absence, after a pupil has entered, ex cept in cases of protracted s ckness. The above terms are as moderate, it is believed, as the expensiveness ot living and the facilities, which will be provided, will justify. But experience has taught that Parents, who properly ap preciate the education of their children, are mcire solicit ous about the character of the instruction imparted, than about the price paid for it. Hence the prime object will not be to make the school as cheap as possible, but to render the instruction as effici ent as possible The subscriber flatter? himself that the experience he has had in teaching young ladies and the satisfaction he has been enabled to give, w II be a sufficient guarantee, to nil who may be disponed to patiouize his school, that their daughters will be properly cared for, and faithfully instructed. And as he has undertaken this enterprise at the urgent solicitation of numerous friends, and under the im pression that important interests may be subserved there by, he trusts that he shall not lack that generous sympathy and liberal support which have been accorded to him elsewhere. Though thns deprived of Icxhibii to he advan- inges ui ue uerneu irom uie use ol these two potent remedies in Periodic Neuralgias, latterly I lave u-ed the Sulphate of Bebeerine in instances of 'ihis kind and as it has appeared both to me and my patient! v'ith th most perfect success. I prescribed it about d 'romdc of months ago to a lady who had one of the mst seme attacks of forehead and face Neuralgia that 1 Kinen.l . r to have seen. It came on towards noon, and! kept her in blindness and agony for some time. The I oi dn.aiv medical at tendant on the family had leeched !h, r, ci-, without relief. I advised the Bebeerine lo be gi,Kn in io gram pills repeatedly during the interval between "the paroxysms. As the medicine seemed to have! no ellect, I gradually increased it, till on the (bird day sic took a bout half a drachm of the Sulphate during thel fourteen or sixteen hours intermission. To tell you he truth, 1 was beginning to despair- of seeing' the sufferings of my patient in any way .-relievedSbv it, a..i would have changed it for some other remedy next day (but suth was not required; as, after the large dose 1" mentioned, the usual tit was greatly less in severity, ui diin a day or two entirely disappeared. Of her own accord m"v patient fell back upon lhe Be beerine pills stme 'tin'e afterwards, when the Neuralgia was, again Unreal cued and it ogam speedily disappeared. 1 " Last year I saw a similarcase of periodic Tic in the face of a lady far advanced in pregnancy. It yieldtd rapidly when the patient was using the Sulphate of iBebetrine alone. I fiayea lady at present under my care who has been suffering from distressing pains in I the face, shoulder, and other parts of the body. Beforeil saw her she had been put on the use of Guiacum, Colchicum , etc., under the supposition that the pains were rheum--atic. They occur with a kind of irregular periodicity. The. patient at the same time suffers from monorrhagia. Quinine, Arsenic, etc., have failed to relieve heri Latterly I placed her upon the use of the Sulphate of Bebeerine and at. my last visit she stoutly declared that she bad derived far more benefit from this medicine (than from any others I bad previously prescribed for hr "I have a patient from India, where she had suffered from Ague, and whose stomach seems always to rebel against Quinine. Since coming to Edinburgh she has had repeatedly a recurrence of Aguish synfploms, and has taken Bebeerine for tbem without feeling those symp toms of gastnc irritation and headache which Quinina seems to inflict upon her. I "In other cases where I have employed the Beheerine, either as antipenodic or as a tonic,, it has caused far less of those irrttatingand stimulant effects twhich we see produeed by the use cf Quinine." - Testimonials from North-Carolina Physicians are in the agents hands, certifying to the virtue and success of Bebeerine in Neuralgia and other diseases. j PreJa-reDd So,d Whole8ale by INNERARITY and Co., at their Chemical Works, Anderston, Glasgow Glasgow Apothecaries' Cot. f For sale by Wm.
