V 2m ' ' From the Spirit ofbe Age. - Raleigh," Oof. 18, iS55. Miu Editor : The announcement of a Pros pectus" of tb " N. a Advocate," by the Com mittee appointed by the Conference to. carry, in to effect their resolution on that subject, seems tb hare produced considerable sensation in jsoroe ; quarters. Dr. Lee accompauies its publication ia the Richmond C. Adrocaie ' with an edit orial; deploring the act, but assertingthat the time for him to give advice had gone by. M-. Myers, editor of the "Southern C. Advocate," is not satisfied with a Jeremiade, but take higher ground. This gentleman, "to save iliera (tiie if. CL Conference) if possible from takiug what we (the editor) believes to be an unnecessary, if not an unwise step," enters his solemn protect against such a measure. Tliese gentlemen, of courseare not actuated by telnVh motive, but the good of the church, and as in duty boutiJ to take care of the interests of N. C. ". As no member of the Publishing Committee up to the presenHime, has deemed it necessary to reply to the strictures of the " S. C. Advocate " on their Prospectus, we beg leave, as a member of the Conference authorizing the act, to submit a few thoughts on the subject, through the medium of your paper. 1. The right of an Annual Conference to es tablish a Religious Newspaper within its bound aries arid under its control, has not, we presume, -'tw&! tirar h,m nrrrnrri rtr rj CffiV contrary, VO enctrarugt lilt) meanuie, tiio ucn, vuiiicicutc held t St. Louis, 1850, jassel a rcsolmiou, re questing the Bishops of the church, " whenever one or more Annual Conferenoesxl'-em it exne li ent to establish a religious Nwj;ipjr within their boundaries, to. appoint an diior to super- ! intend it" We thought we were a Conf trews and acted under this resolution. ' Heretofore an enterprising spirit ha- been deemed praise worthy. Is the N A I- ..1 C. Conference alone to be an cicepuun ! ,is sue not a Vonrerencu f is sue not capable of forming a correct opinion of h-r own wants! or is she dependent upon the edi tors of the Richmond and Southern Christ.au Advocates to think for her." We had supposed that she grew of sufficient size at St. Louis, 1850, j , to oegin to tliinK tor herself, it ve were mis taken, will Mr. Myeis tell us, when he thinks she will jjbe capable of attending to her own busiuetw in her own jvay ? Does he think she will grow large -enough at the Geh. Conference "of 1858! if nut, when will her minority -cease l But admitting that the X. C. Conference has not transcended her rights, in attempting to es tablish a paper of her own, without consulting certain distinguihed brethren of other Confer ences, Mr. Myei s objects to "the purposes to which the papei is f be devoted," especially the "interests of N. C"; and' expresses great fears it may supercede the religious papers of the church in soinejjai ts of the S:ate, which he seems to think are under the especial guaidian ship of himself and Dr. L. e. The eilt-.r ia es pecially horrbr-stnek n at the i.iea of some tt cular matter, connected wi Ii " the p ..-ition " of N. C. being introduced into its columns, and it too called an "Advocate." Yet the reader will find iu the S. C. Advocate of the same filte in .which rent is giveu to these pious feeling, t.e Charleston Markets published for the benefit of S. C. and Western N. C. readers, whiisthose ; of Charlotte, X. C. are overlooked, ami no more ailusion made to the markets of. Wilmington, than if such a seaport were- not. in existence. And indeed, if it has r.equ.red 20 yeirs for the S. C. Advocate, boastingiy called by its edi tor a Gen. Con. paper, to obtain a circulation of 200 copies within the b .undaries of the N. C. Conference, we think it high time to present our people a different specimen, of a Methodist religi ous Newspaper. They will" then, at least, have the advantage of making a selection. But does ; Mr. Myers seriously think, the members of the i: C. Conference der all the disadvantages that a private corres pondent encounters, in contending with an edv tor in the columns of his own paper. If nothing eise had occurred, np to this time, tb'iB simp K,irisuuicieii pro"i io our. minds of the lie cessityof a paper" to defend the w interests . our position." What the 8. Advocate Aa beer, or ts now, with regard to the NiC. Conference, the R. C. Advocate can at any time become. The- same arguments apply to both papers. Why could not the R. ami S. C. Advocates as well subserve the interests of N. C. as the s! ana ss.Kj. Advocates do those of Alabama, or v the S. Advocate does those of Georgia ! We are' much surprized that this question should be asked by a gentleman of Mr. Myers' discernment Is not the present editor of the S. C. Advocate Georgian f Did it never occur to Mr. Myers, that he ought' to understand the 'interests' of his own State, and therefore, ba able 'to adapt' his paper to her wants Was not Dr. Simmers of Alabama, for years assistant editor of this paper, for the express purpose of adapting it to the ' interest, of that State and is not Rev. Mr McTyiere, an Alabamian, at the present time editor of the N. O. Advocate ! AodJyet, Mr. ... .j. i . . Augers propouuus jus. interrogatory with as much confidence as if he were entirely ignorant of these facts, or thought his readers, so. 4. Mr. Myers says, that lasFvprlng, be sent a copy of his paper to every member of the N-. C. Conference. We are certainly obliged to him for that courtesy. It was never extended to us from that quarter before. Vet ifdid not prevent our Prospectus fr. m seeing the light. Mr. Myers is certainly an able tactician. Ii first cajoles then sculds and threatens turns prophet predict-, a failure of our scheme, and yet we obstin ately persevere. ell, his efforts, at least, de serve success. There'iiiust be something wrong aboul i he matter. Ue 'either started - at the wrong time, or we are an incorrigible set. Lastly. Mr. Myers eagerly conclude.-', that at'er a. I, perhaps he was meddling in a 'question with which he had ho business' that as the matter was g..ttn up by a joint stock company the matter belonged to the Stockholders. It is a won.ltr, so natural a suggestion did not pre sent its -if sooner. He, however, comforts. him sell with the r. flcctiontliat theg at least take all the risk ; nd assures us in advance, that i we app.y to the Gen. But a protest is entered against our adopt ing "the family name, Advocate" for our paper On this point, we of N. C. and Mr. Myers are very nearly agreed. We were conscious that we would have, in North Carolina a very strong prejudice to contend against iu that name. TUCKER7 " -; ' : 18. - Anew and singularly successful remedy for tha- cure of all Bilious diseases Costiveness, Indi gestion, Jaundice, Dropsy, .Rheumatism, Fevers, Gout, Humors, Nervousness, Irritability, Ii.flamma tibns, Headache, Pains in the Breast, Side, Back, and Limbs, Female Complaints, &c. .S c. Indeed, very few are the diseases in which a Purait'.ve Medi cine is not more or less required, and u-."h sick ness and suffering might be prevented, if i harm less but effectual Cathartic wert more freeiy used. No person can feel well while a costive habit of body prevails ; besides it soon generates serious and often fatal diseases, which might have been avoided by the timely and judicious use of a good purgative. This is alike true of Colds, Feverish symptoms, and Bilious derangements. They all tend to become or produce the deep seated and formidable distemper which load the hearses all over the land. Hence a reliable family physic is of the first importance to the public health, and this Pill has been perfected with consummate skill to meet that demand. An extensive trial of its virtues by Physicians, Profes sors, and Patients, has shown results surpassing any tning hitherto known of any medicine. Cure have been effected beyond belief, were they not sub stantiated by persons of such exalted position and character as to forbid the suspicion of mi truth. Among the many eminent gentlemen who hava testified in favor of these Pills, we may mention : D.a. A. A. Hates, Analytical Chemist, of Boston, and State Assay er of Massachusetts, whose high professional character is endorsed by the Hon. Edward Everett, Senator of the V. S. Robert C. Winthkop, Ex Speaker of the Hons of Representatives. Abbott Lawrence, Minister Plen. to England t John B. Fitzpatrick, Cath. Bishop of Boston. Also, Dr. J. R. Chilton, Practical Chemist; of New York City, endorsed bj Hon. W. L. Marct, Secretary of State. Wm. B. Astor, the richest mau in Ameriq S. Leland & Co., Propr'a of the Metropolitan Hotel, and others. ' Did space permit, we could give manv hundred certificates, from all parts where the Pills have been used, but evidence even more convincing than the experience of eminent public men is found in their effects -upon triaL These Pills, the result! of long investigation and study, are offered to. th public as the best and most complete which-lje present state of medical science can afford. They are compounded not of the drug themselves, but of the medicinal virtue only of Vegetable remedies, extracted by chemical process in a state of purity, and combined together in such a manner as to insure the best results. This system of composition for medicines has been found in the Cherry PeetMal Jills fcotb, to prroJmee a more efficient remedy than had hitherto been ob tained by any process. The reason is perfectly ob vious. While by the old mode of composition, everT medicine is burdened with more or less of acri monious and injurious qualities, by this each indi vidual virtue onfy that is desired for the curative effect is present. All the inert and obnoxious qual ities of each substance employed are left behind, the . curative virtues only being retained. Hence it elf-evident the effects should prove as they hav proved more purely remedial, and the Pills a surer, more powerful antidote to disease than any other medicine known to the world As it is frequently expedient that my medicine should be taken under the counsel of an attending Physician, and as he could not properly judge of a remedy without knowing its composition. I hTe supplied the accurate Formulae by which both mf Pectoral and r ula are made to the whole body of Practitioners in the United States and British Amer ican Provinces. If, nowever, there should be anT one who haa not received them, they will b promptly forwarded by mail to his address. Of all the Patent Medicines that are offered. ho few would be taken if their composition was known ! Their life consists in their mystery. I hav - mysteries. ' The composition of my preparations is laid open to all man, and all who are competent to judge on the subject freely acknowledge their convictions or their intrinsic merit.
