Badger acted aa conductor- A. B. Andrews, the efficient superintendent of the' roact, accompancd the' train: The whole was under the direction of J, JLBetts, marshal of the day. Every precantion was taken to avoid collision or accident, and with i these arrangements, a beautiful day, nd every one disposed to enjoy tbe'occa- sion and help his companions enjoy it, the day promised to-be a happV onl, uand such it proved to be. , .. Arriving at a little after 10 o'clock, the excursionists repaired to the park, and were welcomed to Ridgeway by CoL J. M. Heck, of the Ridgeway Company, who was re sponded to by W. J. Palmer, Superintendent of the School, The party was joined by two or three hundred of the people of Ridge- j way and vicinity, and with these accessions, numbered, all told, nearly & thousand per sons. The whole party then scattered, about the place, seeking the several, means of en- joyment pne children indulged in their youthful sports, and older people engaged in more quiet, but perhaps not more rational means of eniovment, for nothing can be more truly rational than innocent sport of good children. A beautiful rustic, arbor, covered with bark, and presenting a very rural appearance was the centre of attractions, and during the day this arbor and . neighborhood was the headauarters of a large portion of the excursionists. Here the school sung several beautiful pieces -of music, and Rev, Dr. Pntchard delivered a bnet address aopro- priate to the occasion. He congratulated his hearers upon their apparent happiness and exhorted the younger scholars to enjoy themselves as much as possible, being al ways careful, here as every where, to do noth ing that would injure their playmates. Near ! . i . t i a j oy ineiaoies were spreuu, auu auuuuu- OI gJOU lUilig3 was avitcu up iu iiic oano- faction of every appetite. Our enterprising townsmen, Messrs. Bradley & Christophers, were on the ground with their arctic soda fountain and a buddIv of ice cream. The J day was "so hot that their soda and cream i were eariv exnausieu. auu iucu itu i t . i .1 .1 r . I ' was the strongest drink on the ground. During the day large numbers of people visited the stave factory of Huey & Robb, and the handle and spoke tactory ot tue Cunningham Brothers, both run by steam in the same building. The . handle factory, when in full operation, will turn out niuety- six' dozen axe or pick handles every ten hours. The stave factory will turn out 30, 000 perfect staves da:ly. The handles are sent to San Francisco and Australia, and the staves and barrel heads,- ready for use, are sent to Northern markets. The Ridgeway Hotel, one wing of which, inntai'ntnrf tliSr mnma ia npjirl v cnmnleted- o j j r was thrown open,, and generally sought lor shade and rest. When this house is finished it will be one of the finestylf not the best in the State. L We took a drive around, Ridgeway, and were shown the improvements that are going on there. Col. Heck has a ten acre lot very tastefully laid out, upon which he purposes building a residence for himself. Dr. Haw- kins has a similar lot near this, upon which the landscape gardener who laid oft the lot of Col. Heck, will soon commence operations. Several miles of beautiful, hard, suuxtb streets have been built, and during this sum mer a road will be run out into the country ten miles, in two opposite directions, thus making the railroad easily accessible at that point. Several new houses are building. About thirty beads of families have come to Ridgeway and have brought their families, or win no so, a) nuu h uua wm p1" vided, and many more are coming. This place is admirably adapted to fruit raising and many immigrants will make growing fruits for market their business.' fThe Corn- pany have 250,000 peach trees already set, and have in one nursery 20,000 grape vines and 200,000 peach trees. The low freizht, twenty-five cents a bushel, between this point and New York, will enable growers to com Dete with New Jersey cultivators, with the additional advantage of the higher pricesof ar - an early crop which our earlier season will oroduce. These observations convinced many, of 'the excursionists that Ridgeway is destined to become "the centre of a very suc cessful and profitable fruit-growing region and the rapid advance in the value ot prop erty in the neighborhood helps confirm the observation. The excursionists returned to Raleigh, ar riving at about eight o'clock. Not an acci- dent occurred during the trip, except the laughable one of a bo falling squat into a bucket of lemonade no bones broken! Thanks are due to Mr. Johnson, Mayor of Ridgeway, for his exertions to make the visitors enjoy themselves, to the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad Company for" the liberal terms upon which the train was furnished, to the committee of arrangements and the mar shals for getting up and condncting the ex cursion, and to many private individuals for kindnesses which cannot bo enumerated, but which will be long remembered. The day was happily spent, and the- school will wish for its speedy return. See advertisement of the Boyden House, - - in another colnmn.
