Christophers, several bales of cotton in the Baptist Grove would probably have been burned on Christmas day. We were shown a small flannel under shirt Saturday said to have been Gen. LaFayette's when a boy. He gave it t j Judge Nash when he visited Raleigh in 1812. The shirt was in a pretty good state of preservation. Two young men of our city became involved in a diflicmlty Christmas day, and one of "tlrem got the index linger of his right hand bit off, just above the nail. as smoothly as if it had been cut off with a Burgeon's knife. Some mean person saturated a spongue in keroseno oil and tied it to a pigeon last Wednesday night. Tho pigeon lighted on Judge Fuwle's residence, but some passers by happened to see it in time to prevent a conflagra tion. W. C. McMackin, Esq., says he let Col. McDonald win the two turkeys the other day on purpose as he did not care to spend so much money for grain to fatten them. Mr. McMackin says just put up some fat turkeys and he will learn Mr. McDonald how to shoot. Christmas is over, but Mr. J. M. Rosenbaum still sells good clothing at moderate prices. When you want a first class suit of clothes he is 'the man to call on, corner Fayetteville and Har gett streets. A little son of Mrs. Eversfield, living on east Davie street, put some powder in a hole in the ground and put a fuse to it and get it a fire. Dewey received a war rant on the StatS Treasury for $10,000 on account of appropria tion for the colored Insane Asy lum, at Goldsboro. Two little colored toys, were handling a pistol when it sudden ly went off and lodged several shots in tho rist of one of them. The wound is a very painful one. Mr. J. A. Robinson, of the Winston Leader, passed through the city yesterday i , his way to Oxford, to visit his wife's rela tives. He had his family with him. Dr. J. W. Alston will give five dollars reward for the thief who stole his white milch cow about a week ago, and, also, two dollars and a half for the thief who stole his red game rooster from his yard last Saturday. The Baptist Fair, which closod Saturday night, was very enjoy able A large crowd was pres ent each night, aud everything went merry as a "marriage bell." The open air concerts given by the "5 minute cure men," laEt week were very enjoyable. One of them would make' a mocking bird ashamed of himself, were he to hear him whistle "Listen to the Mocking Bird." David Curtis, col., was crossing a ditch near the residence of Mr. Devereux last Saturday, when he accidentally struck the hammer of his gun, which caused 'it to fire, he ball cut the index finger on the right hand off and passed through the brim and crown of lis hat. The boy was doing well at last accounts. A mother of this city was talk ing to her little girl the other day about the Bible and about God's destroying the world with fire. Finally, the little girl looked up in her mother's eyes aad exclaim ed : "Mama, if God destroys the earth with" fire, what wHPhe do with the ashes ?" Messrs. Stronach & Belo. re ceived this morn'ing another lot of those fine large mountain ap ples. They are equal to, if not su perior to, any Norther apples we J lave ever seen. The above firm are receiving consignments oi country produce daily and parties wanting such things would do well to call on them. They are also auctioneers, and parties that are going to move soon had better look up surplus property and get them to sell it for them. The Visitor makes its appear ance again this afternoon, after a. four day's rest, and will continue to make its afternoon, culls as usual. We all feel lested and enter our work with renewed en ergy, determined to make the Visitoe more interesting and ac ceptable than before. Tt will be the constant aim of tho proprie tors to make the paper aeccpta ble to everybody, and wo believe you will aid us in these efforts.
