At that time we were in hab its of the kindest intercourse, lie stem ed highly flattered by this tranifrstation of the President's confidence, and offered no objection to an acceptance, except in timating: a possible interference- with- hi private business. The next day he in formed me that he would accept, which reply I communicated to the President. 11
