FftKMONT, President Executive Committee Kooms Cape Fear Ag ricultural Association, Wilmington, N. C, July 10, 1869. Wilminyton Star. Prom the Mlkborrf Recorder, HOW TO RAISE TURNIPS. At a score or more of farmers, old and youmr, have asked me to give them my plantftt rail ing turnips, 1 am vain enough to think my plan a good one, and that the public will be benefitted bv leriing it through your columns. But, a ' Kaaraaij and Hvrian "ventTrwar very irroth" because the ..ph.-t Elirha lid not bid him "do eome great thing;" to make him do so simple and old fogy a thing a "wash and be cleans" perhaps wUl your readers be disappointed when fliey learn how simple and easy my way of rais ing turnip is. Simple as it is howeyef, f fnade by U in ISfifi on hve-sevenths of ah acre 500 bushels measured and put tip for winter use al ter having used from the patch for my table from early in the season tilUhe time of taking them up (about the middle of November): In 1868 1 made from one acre 450 bushels for winter use, having fed to mv hogs beforehand 100 bushels 1 think, or thereabout. My plan is to make the land rich with good, well-rotted stable manure ; plow deep : harrow and cross-harrow, until every clod is broken and the roanure is thoroughly in corporated with the soil. IM this be done by the 1st and fcOth when the soil comes into good plowing condition after a season, with a one-horse turning plow make ridges, two feet or a little more apart, by throwing two light forrows to gether. Knock off the top of the ridge with a hoe handle or bean pole or, better still, a light band plow with a bit not more than 21 inches wide, run a farrow on the flattened ridge an inch and a quarter deep (better under that depth than over it i : snrinkle in this furrow No.l Peruvian Gnago at the rate of 100 rb. to the acre; cover the guano with a hoe or rake then, just over the covered guano, open fj'rjsm,4 or rather barely inake a mark With soine light - implement (a sharpened bean-pole or a beanpole with a twenty pennv nail driven into it wjll answer) not pver a half inch deep ; sow the seed a this and cover ; with the back of a spade paddle sharply, so as to Sress the soil around the seed. In three or four ays the seed will be up and the flea-bug on the ground ready to "gobble" them down. You may keep off his attack for a short time by sprink ling the plants when the dew is on them witli eoot, dry dirt from an old house (if the salt-pet re makers did not use it nil for another purpose) quick lime or Baiigh Haw Ifone Phosphate. In ten days the plant, under favorable circnni hinii4 will h,. nevond the reach of iheflta-bin,'. If the sod is free from grass and weed seed you i will make a good crop of turnip, ancr mining i to six inches without further work, but a much better crop, most likely twice the amount bv giv ing them thorough cultivation, first with the hand plow and hoe, and nest witfe bull tongue plow when th,e plants have attained suf- ncieni size.
