The recent collapse in the grain market, thongh nmnewbat- sndtlen. must have been foreseen by all who had n fair kuowledire of the ootintiful crop gathered iu this cottntry, and of the unexpected yield of the European harvests. The developments, taken in con nection with the general course of trade, a witnessed for several years past, have d ubt less prepared all careful observers fur the present depression of the market. The Eu ropean crops do not, indeed, ."fford a sufficient supply at any time for Fiance and Great Britain throughout the year, perhaps not more than eight or nine mouths ott of the twelve but uut.il they are nearly exhaust ed, the people are prime to depeud on their own resources before looUnig to -a instance for aid. This being the case, a reaction in the American market can hardly lie expected to take place before the end of the current year; most ptobahly not before January or Febttary next. We therefore do not look for high prices again before the approach of spring; hut .from that time till the next har vest that is to say at the close of the sea son prices may rise to about the same figure as in the beginning. In the present absence of an e port de mand, millers find themselves with large stocks of Hour on hand and unable to sell at prices corresponding with the price of grain up to a recent date. It is impofstbm there fore that they can afford to pay as much now as heretofore. Itut we anticipate during the fall and w in ter unite an active demand for flour of low grades, through most of the coragrowiug re: gion of the Southland wherever the drought of the past snmnier prevailed- Flour will have to be used to a lartre extent in place of corn ; aud this may hasten the reaction sooner thau it might be otherwise looked for. At any rate, the home demand will relieve the market of h pressnre which, in the ab sence of a'fereign demand, will weigh heav ily upon it. On the whole, though prirps nre now very I.Tw even lower, considering the difference in currency, thatl before the war we ven ture to express entire confidence that they will be much bet tea ii) the course of a few months.
