POPULATION MAY REACH PEAK NEAR YEAR 1950 Studies Show Births Have Declined Rapidly COLLEGE STATION, Raleigh, Nov. 13.—The population of the United States will probably reach Its peak around 1950, according to estimates of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The Agricultural Experiment Station at State College has re ceived reports on studies made by the Department of Agriculture which show that the birth rate in the nation has declined 25 per cent in the past 10 years. * If the birth rate continues to de cline in the same proportion during the next 15 years, it will probably be about equal to the death rate by the middle of the century, it was pointed out. Mo Immigration If 'it continues to decline after that time, the population will di minish unless there is an increase In Immigration. Fifty years from now, there may be only a third as many children in the nation as at present time, and only half as many women of child bearing age. There will be nearly three times as many old people, it is estimated. Many unemployed urban people will seek shelter and sustenance with relatives and friends on farms. Many will start little farms and never re turn again to the cities to live. While millions of farm youths will migrate to cities, other millions will begin farming, most on farms va cated by the death of aged farmers. There will probably be an increas ing number of tenants, it is believd, with much of the land owned by people dwelling in cities. These various developments can be retarded, in the opinion of so ciologists and economists, by decen tralisation of population, industry, and commerce, by the spread of part-time fafming, and by a grow ing realization on the part of the middle and upper classes that they have a responsibility for the wel fare of the nation and the reproduc tion of the race.
