H. A. Debutts (cap D. cap B),
the Southern railway's eastern
lines general manager, said, such
traffic is heaviest at this time of
year, and this Christmas it's heavier
than usual.
On some trains, he said, the pre
holiday travel has necessitated the
addition of from four to si* coach
es.
And, he added it keeps the rail
roaders on their toes.
"Wve never been able to figure
out In advance what equipment to
provide for this service,” he said.
"Some days the travel Is light and
the next day, without reasons
known to us, the coaches will be
crowded to capacity.
"It is probably the happiest, most
enthusiastic group of customers we
have: The Southbound passengers
are Joyously eager to get back
among the homciolks, and the
Northbound passengers are Just as
gay at the prospect of going to
Harlem.
P. R. Albright, 70,
Dies In Wilmington
WILMINGTON, Dec. 18 — MP)—P.
R. Albright, vice president, in charge
of operations of the Atlantic Coast
Line railroad, died last night.
A heart attack ended the life of
the 70-year-old railroad executive
shortly before midnight. He appar
ently was in good health until he
was stricken.
Albright, first associated with the
old Cape Pear and Yadkin Valley
railroad, came with the A. C. L. as
assistant to the general manager in
1904.
He was later general manager.
He became vice president in charge
of operations In 1938.
He is survived by his widow, two
daugnters, Mm. r. E. Little and Mm.
J. F. Robertson and seven grand
children, all of Wilmington.
Albright was a native of Greens
boro.
“Follow The Star”
At New Hope Church
The Sunday School of New Hope
Baptist church, Karl, will present a
Christmas pageant entitled "Follow
the Star” on Sunday night, Decem
ber 30, 1036 at the Karl School
building at 7:30.
This is a playlet which attempts
to bring a picture of the birth of
the Savior to the eyes of present
day youth and make it a little more
dear and better understood.

COMES FOR PRISONER
RALEIGH, Dec. 18.—Mias Mamie
Turner, executive clerk in the gov
ernor’s office, delivered extradition
papers from Governor Ehringhaus
today to Ben Ayers, policeman of
Los Angeles, Calif., who Miss Tur
ner said was the first negro police
officer she recalled coming here as
a state agent In the 20 years she
has been in the governor’s office.
Ayers came to get Nathan Me
Wharton, negro, who completed a
three year term In state’s prison to
day for highway robbery in Ruth
erford county. McWharton is charg
ed with grand larceny In Los An
geles In 1935 while he was a fugi
tive escapee from this state.

The clash occurred on the

Carolina last month, nearly twice

The state board of health releas

raging in the state in recent weeks, j
There were 3,882 deaths in the |
state last month from all causes, a i
rate of 10.3 per thousand popula- j
tion, with pneumonia causing 216, ■
tuberculosis 133, cancer 159, and
influenza 46.
The report listed 99 deaths in au
tomobile accidents, 10 in automobile '
train collisions, 27 suicides and 29
homicides.
The birth rate for November was
20.4 per thousand population.

Taxed With Costs
MORGANTON, Dec. 18. — Bruce
Hildebrand, furniture company of
ficial, was taxed with the court costs
when brought to trial in the death
of Thomas M. Branch, carpenter,
in a highway accident.
It was brought out that Hilde
brand, who had been charged with
manslaughter and hit and run driv
ing, had paid $5,000 to Branch’s es
tate, and the court approved the

Avery County Man
Is Given Reprieve
RALEIGH, Dec. 18.— (JP) —Reed
Coffey, Aery county youth under
sentence to die in the gas chamber
today, received an eleventh-hour
reprieve.
Governor Ehringhaus did not an
nounce the length of the reprieve,
but said it was granted to permit a
further study of Coffey’s case.
Coffey was convicted of the fatal!
shooting of Hardy Coffey, an un
cle. He has steadfastly protested his
innocence.
Won’t lire Gaffney
GAFFNEY, Dec. 18.—Trustees of
the city schools meeting Monday
night declined to accede to a re
quest for the dismissal of Profes-;
sor J. E. Gaffney, principal of the
Granard Street 8chool for colored
children.
The request was presented by
three local attorneys who were re
ported to have been employed by a
dissatisfied element of the colored
patrons.
