] WHAT ARE AMERICA’S LEADERS PLANNING FOR 1937)
It is hardly too late to begin worrying about 1937 and
what the next twelvemonth will bring to this worried world,
and to our own land in particular. We have, therefore, asked
1 a carefully selected number of giant midgets among men and
women to tell us, in a few fumbling words, what they predict
for the year ahead—
Balboa Blatz, investment banker:—All I
can say is that Congress will .convene all
too soon, and Wall Street is naturally ner
vous. Big business men are hurriedly stuf
fing pillows into their pants. I have it on
good authority that 387 bills will be intro
duced increasing the duty on spats and re
quiring everyone who wears a silk hat to
put on a red necktie.
I
Timken B. Wetzelwitz, Congressman:—
I see no justification for nervousness con
cerning the next Congress. There will doubt
less be a few readjustment measures up
consideration, but I do not think Congress
will rush headlong into hasty and ill-con
sidered experimentation. The measures wiU
be, for the most part, trivial—such as m»
own bill providing that fourth quarter in
come taxes be made payable not on l>cera
ber 15, as at present, but on Christmas b'«
Mrs. Wincie Aspindahl, clubwoman :—I
npeak for the vast legion of inarticulate
women who face the new year bravely. We
feel that the tide has turned—and that the
world is ready for a new era of love and un
derstanding. We women are sensitive to
values that men overlook. We feel that the
beautiful romance between Peggy Joyce and
that London Professor of Astro-Physics will
bring the two great English-speaking nations
closer together. How wonderful it would be
if, in 1937, Peggy Joyce could settle with the
Professor and make a play for Herr Hitler!
