Stuck Whistle
Causes Confusion
KANSAS CITY, April 3—f'/’Pi—
The engineer of Misscuri-Kansas
Texas freight locomotive No. 887
pulled the whistle for a crossing
in southern Kansas Sunday night,
it stuck and the train screamed
its way for 75 miles across coun
try, leaving a trail of confused
citizenry who hopefully thought
the war was ended.
When the bellowing engine pull
ed into Kansas City and into the
muffling walls of a roundhouse at
1 o'clock last night numerous tele
phone calls already had preceded i
it.
Yardmaster John Rittenhouse
himself had just begun to inquire f
about the reports when the loco- j
motive thundered past, still j
screaming. j
Trainmen said the whistle could
be heard for 15 miles and estimat
ed 2.250 square miles were cover
ed with confusion.
