Thought Wife Dead;
Convicted Of Bigamy
NEWTON—Convicted of bigamy,
ex-soldier Jacob Canipe was sen
tenced to serve twelve months on
the State’s highway, at hard la
bor, as part of the conditions of
terms laid down in Superior court
here Monday by Judge Allen H.
Gwyn, of Reidsville.
Canipe was given two years ad
ditional, suspended for five years
on condition he remain of good
behavior, violate none of tile State’s
laws, and support his wife and two
children.
THOUGHT WIFE DEAD
Canipe was accused of marry
ing Virginia Shuford of Hickory
on July 16 of this year, while
still married to Minnie Mae Wil
liams Canipe of Lincoln county. He
contended that he had been told
his first wife was dead and that
they had been separated some time
prior to the date her parents told
him she was killed in an explo
sion in Tennessee while on de
fense work. He has two children
wrho are with his father. He. re
ceived a medical discharge after
being wounded in the Pacific about
two years ago.
Ban Revoked
ATHENS, Nov. 14—(/P)—Admiral
Constantine Alexandris, minister
of merchant marine, revoked today
a ban on unemployment allowances
for seamen which had provoked
a hunger strike by more than 400
Greek mariners stranded in Bri
tain,
(A London dispatch last night
said eight Greek seamen had been
hospitalized as a result of the hun
ger strike, which started a week
ago in Liverpool and spread to
* other ports.)
