"Dear Sir : I write these few lines in haste (in order, to get it into the mail, which will leave very early this morning for MontejfeyA the painful intelligence of the death of our Captaili Shive. He died about 12 o'clock! last night, with Typhoid Pneumonia. He was sick only tatiort wasjmore complete : and more liquor mas made out ofitJie same quantity of grain than formerly. It was nw found to be a profitable business. As late as ijhe'year 1800, however, no great quantity of spirits was made riere, and it was still scarce : but after that, the number of stills in operation began lo increase rapidly. Almost every farmer had one near his spring branch.'. Whiskey began. to be very common, and used freely. There; was a great demand for men well acquainted wjth the process of distillation, to conduct the business. Those whobrou'dit good recommendations obtained high wages. From 1600, to 1610, the market in South Carolina was good ; but the number of stills was so great as greatly to reduce the price, which had been as high as 1 25 to m 50 per gallon. Farmers cut down their timber, cleared their land and planted it in corn, till it was worn out : then they threw it open, and cleared "more : and though it was originajlly good land,; like the prairies in the Western States, proba bly there is no part of the County, as good as this at first, that is now as poor as what would be included in n cir cle reaching some ten or more miles in every direction, having its centre near ihe mouth ofRockv Creek- Du ring the period already mentioned, more liquor was the rest of the County: and (he I'he sale will commence at 10 o'clock terms made known on the day of sale. All are invited to attend as there will be something sold to suit almost everv one, and I know will sell low. F. R. ROl'ECHE. Salisbury! Sept. 14, 1617 2w2I Land for sale!
