Such flashes of eloquence, vsuch logical discrimination inspires me (not with " inefiUble contempt,"; buf with a slight nausea, and make me wonder why one should be less " horri fied " at such sentiments when uttered by a tri-colored than -a white-robed " guardian of the public morals. I would not willingly object to any society which has for its professed object one so laudable as the extirpa tion of drunkenness, and especially to one which boasts so much virtuend intelligence as the Sows but 1 do think (and I am not singular in the belief) that it is overstepping the modesty of truth to say that the " Order has effected what the Church was unabte to accomplish. In accordance wi,th previous notice, a large and en thusiastic meeting of the citizens of Wilkes assembled in the Courthouse in Wilkesboro', on the Gth jrtst., tit be ing Tuesday of County Court,) when on motion of C. A. Parks, the meeting was organized by calling Col. A. Mitchell to the chair, and on motion of L. B. Carmich ael, John W. Martin ariid C. A. Parks were appointed secretaries. The chairman upon taking his seat, explained the ob ject of the meeting to be, to devise ways and means by which to carry into effect, the charter granted by the last Legislature for the navigation of the Yadkin river, and to encourage the taking of stock in said improve ment, lie then addressed the meeting at some length, showing in a clear and forcible manner the importance of this work, and particularly to the counties contiguous' to the river. L.Ik Carmichael being called for, addressed the meeting in an effective manner, and concIuded'byr offer ing the following resolutions, w hich were unanimously adopted : Resolvr.d, That we duly appreciate the importance to any community, of a cheap and ready acceps to the markets ot the world, and the impediments and depri vations that depress all industrial pursuits of a people,, who like ourselves, are excluded from the great thor oughfare of trade ; and we therefore heartily approve the promised means of improving the Yadkin river to suit it for the purposes of navigation. Reunited, We believe that great and permanent in terests of the State, involving the future condition and prosperity of a large portion of its citizens, are to be es sentially affected by the fate of this measure ; and we believe that the counties lying on the Yadkin River, will I find in the success of this measure inestimable advan tages in the invigorated industry and enterprise of their, citizens, and the enhanced profits of their pursuits; while in its failure, they will find their doom in hopeless toil, spiritless exertion, and impoverished homes, j j Required That in considerution-of the especial inter est that we, the people of Wilkes County have mlhe proposed improvement of the Yatfkin river, we pledge ourselves zealously to use all proper exertions to ensure the achievement of this object.
