From Pennsylvania the returns are cheering, and give assurance that she will yield her powerful sup port to the Democratic Presiden tial candidates. The returns from Georgia are not so favorable as we had anticipated but no doubt seems to exist of her going also, with the Democracy of the coun try in the Presidential election. Post Office Denartmcnt.Bv I an authentic statement from uJC Treasurer's ffiee, it appears thai ; the funds of this Department re maining in Rank on the lt of last mouth were as follows, vix: Whole amount in bmk, - $358,319 11 j Warrants issued and nnl t. iiH - fifi 7:"S7 7fi i f""- Dipo.-able funds on hand, - $329, 5G I 33 This amount is rapidly increas ing, and will continue to increase, for some months, before arrange ments can be perfected for its ju dicious expenditure. Indeed, o unexp ctedly rapid has bt-en the redemption of this Department from its embarrassments, that no one apprehended the necessity of making preparations in lime to nborb the surplus revenue which would remain afier ihe accorn plisL neut of that object. We learn tha the increase in the revenue of the Department continues. Fur the quarter end ing on the oOlh of June last, they exceeded the revenue of the cor responding quarter of last year 17 per cent. It cannot be otherwise than gratifying to the friends of ihe ad miuisfation to see this Depart ment, which has been the occasion of so many unmerited charges, placed oi such elevated, ground. It promises au honorable close to the clorious administration of Andrew Jackson. Globe. C7"Bery B.Schoolcraft, Esq. Maj. Whiting of the U. S. Army, and J. W. Loss of the Steam-packet Will iam Gibbons. We last evening conversed with ihree of the pas sengers of the steam-packet Will iam Gibbous, vix. Messrs. N. VV. Holman and J. II. Vincent of Al abama, and Hugh U. Holloway of Augusta, (Geo.) who arrived in the Elizabeth City stage. They informed us that the W. G. under temporary command o( ('apt. Halsey, (her regular com mander Capt. Spinney, being left sick at New York,) left New York on Saturday afternoon, bound to Charleston, with about HO pas sengers, among w hom were 32 la dies and 1 i children; that on Monday morning, the wind blow ing fresh from N. K. the packet struck, and it was then perceived that she was in the midst of break ers, in which situation she re mained thumping until day light, when they saw the land about 200 yards ahead, which proved to be the south point of Roddy's Island, at the mouth of New Inlet. The Captain then set the engine to work to back her oil but only succeeded in shifting her position to the south side of the Inlet, where she was forced up by the and children, succeeded in get ting on shore with their baggage, the remainder prefering to remain on board. Those who landed made for a house about three miles off, on Pea Island, which they found to be uninhabited, but w hich afforded them a shelter dur ing the tremendous storm of Tuesday, though they suffered much for want of provisions and water. The next day, (Wednes day) they all returned to the beach, except our informants who hired an oyster boat to take them lo Flizabeth Citv. They state that the other passengers had chartered two schooners to take them on to Charleston. We also learn from them that two schnrs. sa,d to be from New York bound to the South, went ashore during the gale of Tuesday, on Cape Halteras. ib. 07The brig Carroll, Capt. Mitchell, sailed yesterday morn ing for New Orleans, having on board 100 passengers, who are I O bound to Texas. ib fialeigh and Gaston Hail lioad. We learn, from a correct source, that this work is progress K handsomely. The enterpi is inK engineer now engaged upon it has forty miles located, which will be let in Petersburg on this day, and in 20 days there w ill he ten miles more located, which will also be let immediately. For more than forty milts, this road is located along a high dry ridge of country, without a single bridge in that distance, and with very liltle masonry of any de scription, except a few dry drains. The road will consequently be constructed at a very small ex pense, and, as it will not be liable to be washed away by freshets on such a locality, the subsequent re pairs will be proporlionably light. The timber will also last much longer in this high, dry situation. The grades are generally very ea sy, and a large proportion of the road is perfectly level. The straight lines are long and are united by curves of laree radius none being less than 2000 feet, or 3 dec. curve; but generally they are 1 and 2 deg. curves. Such are ihe ail vantages to be obtained by locating a Rail Road along a ridge. The road, we further learn, pr.sscs through a section of coun try much resorted to, on account of its salubrity, by the people from the lower parts of Noiih Carolina. It has, however, been remarkably healthy even on the Roanoke this year. The men workinc on the Bridge across that River, though frequently in the water, have continued in fine health. Mr. Heron, an engineer of much merit; well known and es teemed by many of the citizens of Richmond is engaged upon this work; and we doubt not will ac quit himself honorably and use fully. It will not now be long before we have the Capitols of Virginia and North Carolina united by one continuous itail Road. liichmond Comp. Michigan.- n Election was held in Michigan iiMhe week be fore last for fifty Delegates to the Ann-Arbor Convention, to assent or dissent to the proposition of Congress relative to the admission of the State of Michigan into the Union, with the boundary pre scribed, &c. Sufficient returns had been received at Detroit, at the latest dates, to show a large majority against assenting to the proposition of Congress. ' Florida. Extract of a Letter to the Editor of the Savannah Georgian dated Jacksonville, (E. F.) Sept. 2G. "Gov.
