Raleigh, October 4. 18'j. ' Raleigh, September I. lS3f For five or six years previous to the spring of 1844, a negro man of mine had been much affl-cted with an ulcerated arm ami nana, wnt n rendered him alums! use less. The ulcer embraced ; lint part of his arm from the elbow down, including his entire hand, which was literally a mass of S putrefaction. A joint of one Cnjer, and a part of the thumb, perished and dropt oiT. A more distressing and hopeless case I h.ive never beheld. It was abandoned by hi physician as incurable, except bv am putation of the hand. The bet medical treatment having fail ed to relieve the man, I placed him under the care of Mr. William V. We w ish io ha?e il li-tinclly understood, that we are not inimical to Masonry, Temperance, the dis tribution of the Bible, or I he spread of the (jo-pel but we do condemn the mingling of professors and non-protessors of reli gion in societies, and the making a cralV of religious mailers, in every shape and foi m whatsoever Believing th t Theological Schools, Bi ble. Missionary, Tract, and Sunday School Un'iMii Societies, are the same in principle unscripturiil f-avor more of "lucre"' than of "good will towards men," we are opposed to them. Some of Ihe children of God, surrounded ! with, and interspersed amongst, the advo cates of Missionary and other societies, are denied the happiness of conversing with those of the same judgment. Others, while grieved with beholding corruptions of the Gospel, are not able to speak for them selves. T his is designed, under God, for Iheir relief. We shall aim not so much to please the fancy, as to inform the ju.'gmenl more to afford matter for solid and last ing comfort, than to give a momentary glow to the feelings. We consider thai the cause of tru'b and of Christian solace is our cause. Deeply impressed with the' belief that the blessing even of truth itself is of the Head of the Church, we cast our. selves upon Him, and send our little paper abroad, praying the Lord to carry with ii some joy to those who are in tribulation and a little rest to those who are troubled.
