For five or six years previous to the spring of 1834. a negro man of mine had been much afflicted with an ulcerated arm and hand, which rendered him almost use less. The ulcer embraced that part of his arm from the elbow down, including his entire hand, which was literal! a mass of putrefaction. A joint of one fin-er. and a part of the Ibumb, perished anddropt off. A more distressing wnd hopeless case 1 have never beheld. It was abandoned by his physician as incurable, except by am putation of the hand. The bet medical treatment having fail ed to relieve the man, I placed him under the care of Mr. William W. Grav, in thi place, who, with his Ointment, has effectu ally cured tie case, although the negro was frequently absent, for weeks and mo-iths together He has been entirely well for the last eight months, and I have good reason to believe will continue so. It would be to fetter genius, to prescribe any limits to the exercise of its poweis, which should, however, in this case, har moniously blend durability, simplicity and grandeur. Although it is impracticable at presenl to estimate the extent of the con tiibutioos that may be roxde, the Designs may be predicated on an expenditure of not less than one million of dollars. The Board of Managers will not "fiend American genius so much as to offer, in this instance, a pecuniary revraid. The artist, whose Design shall be adopted, will feel amply remunerated; and all the De signs will be bound and carefully preserved to which end, it is requested that they be sketched, as near as may be. on paper of a uniform size, of the dimensions of sixteen bv twenty-two inches. FSIOFOSA&S, For publishing in the town of Tarborough, JV. C asemi-moiuniypaperxenrtiita THE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST. EDITED BV MARK BENNETT, Printed and Published by Geo. Howard. HIS publication ispnncipatlyinte nded todefend theold school United Baptists from the many aspersions cast upon them bv deluded persons proiessing their own faith, because they cannot conscientious ly engage in the various money-making schemes of the day, ostensibly intended to promote Christianity, but evidently tnd ing to destroy the great and fundamental principles upon which it is based, by mak ing a sain of godliness. We wish to have it distinctly understood, that we are not inim'n al to Masonry, Temperance, the dis tribution of the Bible, or the spread of the Gospel but we do condemn the mingling of professors and non-protessors of reli gion in societies, and the making a "craft" of religious matters, in every shape and form whatsoever. Believing that Theological Schools, Bi ble, Missionary, Tract, and Sunday School Union Societies, are the same in principle unscriptural savor more of "lucre"' than of "good will towards men," we are opposed to them. Some of the children of God, surrounded with, and interspersed amongst, the advo cates of .Missionary and other societies, are denied the happiness of conversing with those of the same judgment. Others, while gri'-ved with beholding corruptions of the Gospel, are not able to speak for them selves. This is designed, under God, for their relief. We shall aim not so much to please the fancy, as to inform the ju gment more to afford matier for solid and last ing comfort, than to give a momentary glow to the feelinss. We consider that the cause of tru'h and of Christian solace, is our cause. Deeply impressed with the belief that the blessing even of troth itself is ot the Head of the Church, we cast our. selves upon Hiin, and send our little paper abroad, praying Ihe Lord to carry with it some joy to those who are in tribu'a'ion, and a little rest to those who are troubled.
