THIS publication isprincipallyintended todefend theold school United Baptists from the many aspersin3 cast upon them bv deluded persons professing their own faith, because tbev cannot conscientious ly engage in the various money-making schemes of the day, ostensibly intended to promote Christianity, but evidently tend ing to destroy the great and fundamental principles upon which it is based, by niak ing a gain of godliness. We wish to have it distinctly understood, that we are not inimical to Masonry, Temperance, the dis tribution of the bible, er the spread of the Gospel but we do condemn the mingling of professors and non-professors of reli gion in societies, and the making a 4,craft" of religious matters, in every shape und form whatsoever. Believing th.it Theological Schools, Bi ble, Missionary, Tract, i.nd Sunday School Union Societies, are the same in principle uirscripturnl savor more of "lucre"' than of "good will towards men," we are opposed to them. Sonic of the children of God, surrounded with, and interspersed amongst, the advo cates of Missionary and other societies, are denied the happiness of conversing with those of the same judgment. Others, while grieved with beholding corruptions of the Gospel, are not able to speak for them selves. This is designed, under God, for their relief. We shall aim not so much to please the fancy, as to inform the judgment more lo afford matter for solid and last ing comfort, than to give a momentary glow to Ihe feeiings. We consider that ihe cause of tru'li and of Christian solace; is our cause. Deeply impressed with the belief that the blessing even of truth itself is of tlie Head of the Church, we cast our. selves upon Him, and send our little paper abroad, praying the Lord to carry with it some joy to those who are in tribulation, and a little rest to those who are troubled.
