Friday- : : : March 16, 1877 Blaine has been dining with Evarts and Schurtz. What's up? Where -ever Blaine of the eyil hand puts his finger, look for devilment. The opposition of Blaine, Morton and Chandler will go farther toward rallying the conservative masses to the support of President Hayes than any thing else. The light of Beast Buttler's spoons pales by the added infamies of Blaine, Morton, Chandler &Ca. The Blue Glass cure can never eradicate their marrow-deep disgrace. The congressional . election New Hampshire resulted in gain of one for the Republicans Now it stands two Republicans to one Democrat. Tha Legislature adjourned on iHonday. If that pleasant piece o business had been performed on Saturday, the Sunday's per diem would have been lost and that . wafts the matter with Hannah. The Washington correspondent of ihe N. Y. Sun says four N. C Congressman were bought over for the High Commission. With the Raleigh News we call for names. "We'd right such wrong whene'er 'tis given E er though u were in the Court of Heaven The latest phase of the South Carolina and Louisiana embroglio, is that the President is trying to compromise thvth out, that is giv in" Packard uid Chamberlain some other bones to pick that they may relinquish tht-ir bogus titles. It is said that President J?ayes is trvins to build up a Whig-re- publican party at the South. a Here's where he makes his mistake We ha? no Whigs as contradis tinsuished from democrats at the South We have been opposition ists to misrule and carpet-bag op pression.- it appears as if every body, leg islator and otherwise, in Raleigh went madly in love with every body else. Thev resolved themselves into a vast Mutual Admiration So sciety a sort of You-Tickle-Me- and-I'II-Tiekle-You ccmbmafciba-a huge "Ring" of Affection for Com mon praise, just before the legis lature- adjourned-. Now, if you san get your constit negtH to join, all will be well. ZLIVta Congress. Besides the myriads of frauds, mountain high, unearthed by the Forty Fourth Congress, it has ren dered itself imortal by refusing to piss the army appropriation bill until the clause was inserted prohib iting the army from being used in the South for election purposes. This will probably cause the President to call the next Congress together in April. Gov- Tilden. Gov. Tilden is said to bear his cheat-out with little composure. When a man holds four aces and his oppo nent pulls five knaves on him, he is apt to "sour" a little on the act. Gov. Tilden is an old maji. and his day is gone, never to. return. BtTt it does not set in the gloom of an eternal night. While the page of history is turned by the future read er the blush of shame will mantle his cheek at the Great Fraud by which the American people were cheated out of their choice for Presi dent. ThaDnty of the Hour Is not to pine or repine at oar great National calamity. An ancient philosopher said if a an kept one eye on the past and the other on the future the present would care for itself . A wise man will ac cept circumstances and govern him self accordingly. To grieve over spilt milk does not prevent future spilling. And the preventive, is not to forsake the ar ticle. The Fay to do is to carefully examine &e milk pail. So it is wrong for a man to say he wont vote. There are some who always will and, we reiterate, it is not the class to rule the 'country. Our advice is to vote in full strength every time and hope for the best. If the country stands this strain, th!e shock may give tb j rem edy. If the Republic fails it is not the fault of the Democrats. First Blood for Hayes- Despite the' mighty endeavors of of the monstrous Blaine, .Morton, Cameron Co., who desired to fix the state (themselves, all the Presi dent's eebinet as published by ns last week have been confirmed. These fiendish ghouls and hyenas who grabble in tbo grave to Ehake the bloody shirt, found themselves with but a scanty following and thev have yielded gracefully. We see the haughty Blaine calling on the President, and making himsel 'numerous' at levees. It means something. What is it? - Hon. D- M- Eey- Some of our exchanges have utter ed the sentiment "oft repeated," that the acceptance of office by a South ern man at the hands of President Hayes would be his political doom See what the leading democrats ot Tennessee! tbinV of the acceptance o: a cabinet position by Hon. Poor, Poor South Carolina. An hundred years ago had snch occurrences, as hnve become - com mon to out eyes since, been enact- edj citizens would have held meet ings all over the country and pray ed to be enlisted again under the banner of King George. We see a Supreme Court Judge of a Sovereign State bull dozed and compelled to back down from a judicial position. The Supreme Court of South Carolina had de cided in favor of Hampton. Chief Justice Moses had a paralytic stroke (from which he ha3 since died) and this left the Court with only two Justices, one colored but we let history speak. "This left the Court with only two naembers, Justices Willaid and Wright, the later colored. imme. diately the: heaviest race-pressure was brought upon the colored judge to get a decision in favor of Cham berlain. Judge Willard, although a republican, was known to be in flexible inl the conviction th8t Hampton was Governor, but if Wright, could be influenced it was a tice, bad. and no decision could be JUSTICE WEIGHT INTIMIDATED. i Judge W right resisted the pres sure manfully, and I have ascer tained from! very reliable authority, that on the 1 27th ult. he signed an opinion concurrently with Judge Will&rd, recognizing Hampton. But the presure was too heavy. He w as actually in fear of his life, and said thit his convictions of the law were with Hampton, but that 'if he went against his race he would be killed,' ind to-day he signed an opinion recanting and revoking his order of tSe 27th and declaring that Chamberlain was Governor; and it is believed that he has left the;tovn to avoid the .humiliation of hi aring his two contradictory opinions read in court. SOTJRcl OF THE PRESSURE. The effect of the j.two opinions is curre Qt and has caused excitement, as it is wel known that it is due entirely to the terribtev pressure that has been brought upon the colored judre. The mainspring in the n?toement is believed to be Uni ted S tales district Attorney IX T. vjoroi n, woo claims to be United States Senator. His credentials are signed by Chamberlain, an i if the Uourt nad recognized Hampton they would hay e been waste paper, and all tbe Federal appointees here deprived of his aid and comfort. iZence the noble army of martyrs rallied to secure the Court, and through it the Senator, and through him their office. . ' POPULAR INDIGNATION. This action of the Court1 will lead to trouble. No American community will quietly, submit to a result procured by intimidating the Supreme Court. The feeling is more determined than ever that Hampton must be Governor. A condition of things disgraceful will scarcely be permitted to continue. LATER. I have just succeeded in obtain ing a copy of the order signed by tbe colored Justice (Wright) on February 27th, and also of his to Associate Justice Willard, recant ing the same. The following is the order: THE ORDEB. SrjPBEiffS Couet, Feb. 27, 1877. Ex parteTilda; Norris, alias Til da Stevens. x It is ordered that the relator be discharged from the custody of the Superintendent cf the Penitentia ry. A. J. Willard, Associate Justice, presiding. I concur in the above. J. J. Wright,. Associate Justice. This order recognized Hampton as Governor, but to-day the color ed Justice endeavored to, revoke it in the following memorandum, which recognized Chamberlain as Governor and which was sent to Justice Willard : justice weight's opinion. Ilavinsr attached my name to an order discharging the petitioner in this case, on the 27th day of Feb ruary, 1877, after more .mature de liberation, beleiving that the order should not have been made, I now hereby revoke, recall and cancel said order, so far as my signature mav have eiven it sanction, and substitute tbe foregoing opinion in its stead. J. J. Wright, Associate Justice Supreme Court THE DECISION. To-morrow the court meets, ac cording to adjournment, at eleven A. M., when tbe extraordinary spectacle will be presented of hav ins two opinions read, emanating from the same Justice. Associate Justice Willard will deliver hi opinion and announce the orde signed by himself and Wright as the decision of the court. Wright's dissenting or inion wil also be read, but will be utterly dis regarded by Hampton and his fol lowers, who may in all probability proceed ta more firmly establish their government, having now the legal recognition of the highest tri bunel of the State.
