M. Glennan, owner of that sph ited paper, the Norfolk "Virginian,' has had the liberality and enterprise to send Mr. Robert Htfyden, a very talented gentleman, to Ireland to give his readers an impartial account of the true situation there. No true American citizen can read his elo, queut recital of the way in which 'he 'Lords of the Soil' have ground down to absolute poverty the Irish people, without feelings of genuine sympathy. But few persons were present, but we learn that the ceremony incident o the profession of faith was in strict accordance with the orthodox Hebrew Ritual and was very solemn and . impressive. The convert declared that neither persua sion nor selfish motives influenced her to take the step. Mr. Berger is an old and well-known citizen of 'his county, and a Hebrew in faith. You had a tasta of that branc-i of the Executive as Assistant Secretary of War tinder Stanton, and notwith standing your lofty pretensions, many believe that your game is to get back there as its head, should the Repub licans be driven from power next year.. j We fear that Mr. Chas. A. Dana is a fraud, LOUISVILLE LETXES. LouisvillBj'Kt., Sept 3, '83. Editor of Southerner : Perhaps a I brief communication from this section of our extensive country would not be uninteresting to your readers. After a pleasant lourney -of two days we- reached Louisville on the morning of August 30th, and found quite a large crowd in attendance; at the Expositisn, though the city was not crowded at all. ( It was our first trip through Wes tern North Carolina, and the ride from Henry Station to Warm Springs was full of interest to us and exceed lv pleasant and attractive. The road from Henrys to Asheville is a won derful specimen of modern engineer' ing, but the apparent danger of the ride detracts a great deal from our enjoyment of the fine scenery around us. The road from , Asheville to Warm Springs is constructed on a bed of solid rock with the French Broad river oa one side' and tower ing mountains of solid rock . immedi ately on the other, lhe scenery on this route is very hne and quite va nous, in some places it is most aw fully and ruggedly sublime, while in other places there are i lovely vales that stretch out in "pensive quiet ness" as far as the eye can reach, dotted here and there with neat cot tages and covered with flocks of leautiml sheeruand herds of hne, Iat cattle and horses. After leaving Warm Springs the mountains grad ually disappear and the country be comae less and less undulating nnti' on reaching - Louisville ; we find tbe country almost as level as eastern Carolina. . j. I wish that every farmer in the counties of Pitt and ; Edgecombe could and would take a trip through the Western j States. It would be worth millions to North Carolina and her people. Our people would learn a lesson which! they would not soon forget, if they could see how thor oughly these lands are cultivated and how much hard labor is saved by tbe universal use of improved agricultu ral implements. These people have so perfected the art of cultivating the soil that farming in the West haa ceased to be a laborious occupation1 Farmers out here are, as a general rule, "independent and prosperous. The mortgage system does not pre vail among them and their children all go to school. , This happy state of things might well exist in North Carolina, which is more - blessed nat urally, if our farmers would cultivate less land and manure that better, and raise their own corn and meat, and introduce labor-saving farming tools. -i. -i i - .i : . ; The exhibition here is Terr fine BUU TVJ uiabruvuro. x am, aowever. The Weldon "News" says a homi cide was committed near Tillerv's station, in the lower part of Halifax county, on the 17th of August, which baa just come to light. Enoch Brown, colored, , who is about 38 years old, jame from Virginia with bis suppos ed wife, who was from Richmond. He stopped m-W eldon and worked for Mr. WrHTBrown of " this place, a sboat while.' he says, and then went to Tulery s, where be nae been for a mbuth or mix weeks working. lor Mr. Tillery. H bad been living with the woman, Lucy Bird, as bis wife about 18 months. He discovered that the woman had been too familiar with other men and charged her with it. wben a quarrel ensued: Me seUad an axe and struck: at her. only to frighten her, he says. The blade of tbe axe struck ber neck, severing tbe jugular vein, from which she bled to death m a short time. He took her to the fire-place, where she remained until night, when he dragged her out of the honse and buned her in a grave about eighteen inches deep, about three' feet from his window. He then piled trash and chips oa the grave to give it the appearance of a wood pile, tio one suspected any thin? until a week after, when her father asked Brown where his daugh-' ter was. Brown aepried that she had gone to Richmond, and expressed uneasiness at ber late arrival there. His statement about her leaving were contradictory and excited the suspi cions of Bird who began to seek at the truth of the matter. Iost Sat urday he saw a place that seemed to be freshly dug and a closer examina tion revealed the limb of a woman. He left the body as it was and sent for Coroner 'Jenkins, ; who exhumed the body, which proved to be that of Lucy Bird, though much ; deeompos ed. . After hear ng the evidence, the jury returned a verdict that she came to her-death at the hands of Enoch Brown. Brown was taken to Halifax jail to wait trial This is the fourth prisoner now in jail charged murder. Curs for Hog Cholera. Columbia Yeoman. ' ! Maj. John Alexander, of - this city, met a gentleman from Lexington county the other : day, who said that he had lost 35 bogs from cholera, and it looked like he would lose the balance soon, whereupon the Major asked him why he did not core them. Of course he said he would if he knew how. He was then told to take what is known as "smart-weed, mike a tea of it and give it to them. If they were very bad oft, they may be drenched with it, if not it can be ?ut in their food and. fed to them, 'he best way is to mix with meal, making a kind of mush The gen tleman tried the remedy at once and reports that be did not lose another hog. Others, in bis neighborhood, bearing of bis success, tried the rem edy, with the same result. A cure so simple and so easyy obtained as "smart-weed" grows everywbe should be generally kmown.
