'alls' onslaught upon the South w s complete, and in our great man's happy way. Our regret is that our limits prelude the publishing of it in full. However much one may condemn Mr. Blaine's politxs and his political methods be has the sympathy of all in the many dire afflictions visiting his house. A few days ago it was bis son taken from him, now death has called for his daughter. The Raleigh Call is vigorously urging a State. Exposition next year By all means let us have it, and a big one too. North Carolina iu climatr, soil, minerals and inhabi tants is the greatest State in the, galaxy of forty-two. It is tima we were showing ourselves, displaying a little p .rdonable vanity. The Southerneb seconds the Call's call. A HOKKIBLt: HOLOCAUST. At 7 o'clock on the morning of February 3rd the residence of Sec retary of the Navy Tracy in Wash ington was discovered To be ablaze and soul-piercing screams were heard issuing from the burning building. The firemen were cjuickly on the scene and recovered the bodies of Miss Mary, daughter of the Sec retary and her maid, Josephine. Both were dead when found alii terribly burned.. Mrs. Tracy jumped from a second story window and died soon after. Mrs. Wilmerding, another daughter of the Secretary and her daughter, jumped from a second story window. The wrist of the former was broken and both were terribly bruised ' The Secretary was taken in an un sensible condition from the building and he will probably recover. When tho dispatch was sent out the deeply bereaved husband and father was still unconscious and unaware of his heart-reodering af fliction. CAST THE DET1L.S OUT. The methods of the Jacobin re publican party are not teassuring to lovers of a republican form of gov ernment. There is danger in their practices and the very devil in their hearts. .The autocratic is tyrannical action of Speaker Reed in the House of Representatives revolutionary and without precedent as it is findd fit companions in the doings of the same party ha Montana, in West Virginia and Ohio. Party right cr wrong has been their motto. Since I876 when the Presidency was stolen practical dem onstratioa has frequently been imade. A parlizan Supreme Court has declared Montana's legislature re public!). In West Virginia after failing to purchase enough votes to elect their candidate for governor they resorted to bribe the legisla ture. In Ohio they will leave no stone unturned to make a republican Supreme Court declare their candi date elected Lieutenant-Governor. Tnese signs would make us feel uneasy about the Republic did we not have and abiding faith in the good sense and justice of the Ameri can people. We believe they will uot tolerate these outrages much longer. They ought not for they are menaces to our institutions, and until condign punishment of this Jacobin party is meeted out to them these revolution ary and dishonest politics will be persisted in. The republican party is bent on purpetua-infr its rule by fair means or fou', but rule it will till the people ip their indignation put forth their strength and hurl it forever from power. It is time they were doini? it I he body politic is apidly becoming lllMAflBa "i 1 - ... I a m i k r wun'lullOB cau'ftaud i.::,r -"jPyiog their capita! m iadustria j TO THE ElECO!riUE fiUABlK A few men: Tn the Oast vou have done well, but therelia abundant room for im provement, and don't you forget it for a moment. It is iriporlant that you should not. Personal and county pride, and the inherent desire in us all for public armrobation should be strone enough to give you retentive memories and willme hearts and hands. But the rzr t -i .. .u: booTHERNpB tuiUKS it sees soraetmug else which should put you on your mettle. By it patriotism and selfish ness, duty and pleasure can be com bined with profit. We allude to the probable jnobilization of the guard of the several states bv the federal V government. It is more than proba ble that the Washington government will be far more liberal .with the citi zen soldiery than heretofore. As it looks now authority will be given eaci Governor to designate a ten company battalion, wLich will go in camp with regulars at one of the summer camps west oi iuc iyiibio3 ippi. The gjuardsmen so selected would get double allowances. They would have an opportunity to see the counlry, to get the benefit of a soldier's life and? training and! to be practically in service for siyarnonth This will be at the expense jof the government The members of the companies so designated will be not only fed while in camp, but also sal aries will be paid. This will be far better for them in a pecuniary way than tn days bivouacing t Wrightsyille. Now, we call your attention to Uiia to ascertain if you would like a LUUULI1 B Ullll ttuu laic niwuuuit ures at some United States barracks such as those at OM Point, Fort Macon and the like. If you wouM, i vou need not expect to get them through any favoritism. The ten companies which will be designated i by the Governor of this state will be . . . i .i tne ten oesi companies; uu me cixi tKtion will be livelv. The Gover- t ,- ' nor has thirty to choose from and I every one of them you may rest assured will do their utmost to be among the ten. You may be vain, you may think that having done well before you will do so again when the time comes. You may; but most certainly! not unless you do better than youj are doing now. Two or three drills will not make you better than two thirds of the other compa nies. To be pne of the ten you must get to work at once, not half of you but all of you. Your countymen would be deeply mortified if you failed, bo would you. So tarn out and begin, now, CHEAPER MONEY The Stiperintendant of the next census has men examining the re corded indebtedness of tbe people. In some counties this has already been done,in others the work is going on, iu all 'it will it will be in a few months. Those so far examined show much less than was anticipated. J3 ut however small tbe sum may be comparatively, the interest charge on it is really very large, in fact enor mous. IF the figures obtained will open the eyes of the people to the immense Bums which they have to pay in th name of fnterest the work will have paid better than the mover thought or hoped. Just at this time when capital is combining against labor and labor is uniting to resist th aggressions and tyrannical demand8 of capital ; every man you meet has some hobby of his which is a panacea for all ills of the body politic or of the individual . One man proves it to his own en tire satisfaction that do away vit trusts ana we shall be happy. Another would inaugerate an earthly paradise by havingj tbe government to issue more money. Another by abolishing the middle men would make the' country blossom as the the rose, and so on down to the Southebneb's which please understand us, we do not claim p a cure all, but it will go a loiig way in that directioi-. The Southebneb's remedy in this instance is to lowe by legal enactment the rate of interest. It is too high and retards our progress and material development. Can't do it, do we hear some say because those who have money to lend will make it up on commissions charged. Well, now let us see. When the public can see the figures which these census experts are col recting we' can be a little more accu late, bnt a few moments, consideration will satisfy most people that four fifths of the money loaned in this county is money which the law does control. Tjb.e ;u y iu ;U h -jds of guardians can t ui is : .1 t oiled, and so can the note lt veu lor land sold under executions and by order of court. If qne will take the trouble to make even a superficial examination an J comparison he will see that the lendings of the banks and of the moneyed men are insignificant com pared with the money men promise to pay for even land Eold by order of court. We hare po feelii.g against men who have mpoey to lend, not by &uy me na we would have them add 10 capita hut tiave, them do t hy pi , in words with you, genue- been , in;; acquiring it they will still be so in eriplojing it; far more so than nine tenths of the borrowers who have more hope thau judgment. Here is the'proposition: Money lenders will more profitably mAMm an enterprise, say a cotton or r ; factory, than money borrowers. No doubt about it, is there? If not then by lowering the rate of interest they will see such investments because it, will pay better than the legal rate of interest! The legal: rate in this state is eight per cent. Is it not too high See what a dollar at compound interest will amount to in 1,00 years. As soon as a man acquires enough to live on he can compound his sur plus as long as he pleases. But at compound interest $2U0,- 000 in 100 years will amount to more than the total valuation of every species of property in North Caro lina. The legal rate of interest should not be higher than six per cent. Who will joiu the Southeeneb in an effort to have th next legislature to make it so? The grip is relaxing its holton K O. Alien. H. Wooten making syrup, they having made one hundred and fifty gallons per acre. It is time the farmers in East Edgecombe have never planted it. They need m t experiment with it, but plant a pleDty of it, convert the juice into symp, feed the seed, (which is just a9 good as corn) to their hogs, and they will find yours a val uable suggestion. Bocky Mount Eipp'es There was very much excitement here Saturday evening anung the negroes, caused by an old colored woman dropping dead on the street She came to town in the morning apparently in good health, and was carried home a corpse. The doc'ors iironounce ii a case of heart dis ease. I learn that on Saturday last, a team of mules on G. C. Bat le's farm ran away with a hite? man named Bradley and threw him out of tbe wagon, the wheel pass ng over his hetd and cutt'ng one of his ears off. About 100 negroes left here Thursday night last for Texas. There are many more waiting to be taken away. They have left this section in large numbers for the past two months, but you cannot miss them. Where one leaves there eeems to be two to spricg up in his place Several new firms have opened business in this place within the last week. Among them are Bunn & Barl w; G . T. Math ews snd W. Three large prize house-: have been completed, and othets will be erected before the seasons opens. The farmers m this part of tbe county are farther advancedat this time with ibeir wotk than I ever remember, and all, with very few exceptions, are going to cultivate some tobacco. I think it safe lo say that tbe acreage in cotton this year will be one third less than last. II. A Eelapse The em'ura'i n fever Lai broke 011 afre h.
