Battle's residence at Cool Spring farm, in the upper part of this county, only a few miles from Rocky Mount, was burned to the ground last Sat urday night about two o'clock. Pursuant to a call of a committee ar pointed at the Vance Memorial meeting, held in this place .on June 1th, for the pur pose of raising a memorial fund to the memory of our late Zeb. Vance, a meeting was held in the Armory on June 25th, of several young men interested in the cause. It was decided to have a literary enter tainment at U" Opera House on July 6th, to raise the desired fund. Several young men and young ladies will take part. The program will be varied, in which will be a discussion as so "Whether it will be for the best interest of this government to elect our Senators by a direct vote of the peo ple."
