In Congress Today
President Roosevelt addressed
the joint session of the Senate and
House of Representatives today
noon and reviewed the progress
made since his .. administration
which included a restoration of
confidence, elimination of child
labor, better conditions in agri
culture, industry and business!. He
said that we were facing a new
order of change and that if there
were anyone to hinder the progress
that is being made let him take
heed to assume responsibility for
it. This nation is a convalescent
that not only wants a cure for our
diseases but a removal- of the
causes. Inequalities must be
wiped out; the overprivileged must
be weeded out and the underprivi
leged uplifted. No one wants to
eliminate the profit motive and
destroy ambition, but excessive
profits. The security of people
must come first, a better liveli
hood, old age, sickness and unem
ployment insurance and decent
homes to live in. It will take many
years to do this, he said. Work
must be found for all able-bodied,
destitute people, and direct relief
which destroys one’s self-respect,
courage and determinations must
stop, and let the local communities

Lanier Club Hears
Spartanburg Speaker
The Lanier club met,.Thursday
afternoon at the Lanier library to
hear Miss Hazel Abbott, head of
the Dramatic Department of Con
verse college, address the club on
“Rhythm.” Miss Abbott had just
returned from a three days’ conven
tion in New Orleans and began her
talk with interesting comments
about the people there. The ad
dress “Rhythm” which was treated
in an unufeual and fascinating
way and illustrated with readings,
was enjoyed by all. During the
business session, the president,
Mrs. George Brockenbrough, an
nounced that Mrs. G. L. Canfield
and Mrs. S. T. Crapo had present
ed the club with a beautiful “Ser
vice Set” and center piece. The
meeting adjourned for tea in
the Holden reading room with Mrs.
Canfield and Mrs. Crapo .as hos
tesses. Those pouring tea were
Mrs. Willis Parsons and Mrs. Anne
Bosworth Greene.
