The Polk county Democratic executive com mittee has filed a protest with the Demcaratic members of the legis lature against the proposal of Repesentative E. B. Cloud to add three members to the Polk county board of commissioners upon peti tion of a majority of the qualified voters. » The Cloud measure, already passed the house and now pending before the senate committee on judiciai-y one, would add T. Williams, county game and forest warden gives the following v Concerning the prevention of fires #n the county., caused by burning of fields and new-grounds: “Peopla having brush, fields and new grounds to burn off should notify the adjoining land-owners 3 days in advance, and should also notify him or the watchman at / the tower on Tryon mountain. The phones are: Tower, 21-3 R; war den’s residence, 21-2 R. ” Mr. Williams also states that, “to be cautious with fires can be of considerable help in reducing the forest fires, saving the county considerable expense in fire fight ing and loss of property.” Mr. Wi liams also stated that those not notifying the adjoining land-own ers are subjelct to a SIO.OO fine and costs. Basketball Results The town league teams brought to a close their season last night in two very interesting games. The Industrial team won the championship when it defeated the Merchants by winning every game p’ayed in the league this season. The Firemen won second place. In the first game last night the Soumerco-Lynn boys took the much favored Firemen in camp by the score of 16 to 7. Close guard ing by the entire winning team was fatal to the Firemen. Fisher of the Firemen, who has always been the main spring of his team, was held to two points. In the second game the undefeated Industrials had a hiard time getting started, but finally giot to clicking and won from the Merchants by the score of 28 to 10. John Walker and Greene led the scoring for the winners, while all the players on both sides put up a good game. Both games were played under, the best of sportsmanship.
