C., THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1935 Waverly Hester Wins Try on Tennis Trophy In one of the hardest fought battles ever seen on the Tryon Tennis courts Wednesday after noon Waverly Hester defeated Fred McLaughlin in the finals of the Tryon Tennis Association tour nament. The score was 6-3; 6-8; 6-4; 4-6; 6-4, making a total of 53 games and five sets of tennis. Mr. Hester, the new champion defeated last year’s champion, J. Lee Lacendar, a few days ago. In the contest yesterday Mr. Mc- Laughlin won 25 games and Mr. Hester 28. Mrs. C. C. Lindsey Funeral services were conducted yesterday (Wednesday) aftrenoon at Reynolds funeral home for Mrs. Catherine Cbok Lindsey, 80, who died Monday at her home on Sun set Drive. Dr. C. C. Weaver, pastor of Central Methodist church officiat ed. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Lindsey is survived by one son, W. E. Lindsey, of Los Angeles, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. J. Hamilton Slagle, Mrs. Eugene Gudger, and Miss Dora Lindsey, all of Asheville, and Mrs. ~H. C. Koonce, of Atlanta, Ga.; eight grandchildren, of whom two, Lind sey Gudger and Hamilton Slagle, live in Asheville and five great grandchildren.—Asheville Citizen. The deceased was a great-grand mother of Misses Patricia and Carolyn Slagle of Tryon. Visit White House Two women whose mountain-top workshop has been visited by three Presidents’ wives—Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Mrs. Herbert Hoover and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt—made their first visit to the White House yesterday. They are Miss Eleanor Vance and Miss Charlotte Yale, toy mak ers and woodcarvers of Tryon, N. C.—Washington (D. C.) Eve ning Star. Exchange For Tax Exempt. Certificates If you have tax exemption cer tificates left over from last year, it will be necessary to get these transferred and replaced by new certificates in order to use them for cotton this year. Such certi ficates will be transferred in the cqunty agent’s office Wednesday, May 29th. Mr. and Mirs. O. H. Hedrick moved to Hendersonville today. Mrs. Edward Ellertson, who spent the winter with her son, Homer Ellertson, and Mrs. Ellert son, has returned to River Fall, Wis.
