G. Remick Killed In Auto Wreck . Royal C. Remick, 61, promoter Y>f the Hogback Mt. resort and a of Ti’yon for a number of years, was killed in an auto acci dent Monday afternoon on a slippery road near Beltsville, Md. Clippings from a Washington, U. C., newspaper state: Remick, member of a promin ent Michigan family, was the Washington representative of the Youngstown Steel and Stamping Co. He had homes in Tryon ajnd Wilmington, N. C., Charleston, S. C., and Charlotteville, Va. He figured prominently in the socalled “lobby investigation” that broke around the War Department in February, 1934. As represen tative of the Bee Tire Co., he told the House Military Affairs Com mittee that there were “irregulari ties” in the War Department’s methods of awarding contracts for «notor trucks and other supplies, f Last May Remick appeared be fore an Armv court martial board and testified in behalf of Col. Alex ander E. Williams. Later Col. Wil liams was sentenced to be dismiss ed from the Army after being found guilty of soliciting and ob taining a loan of $2,500 from the representative of an automobile tube concern interested in War Department contracts. Remick died at Casualty Hos pital of a fractured skull and in ternal injuries. Mr. Remick was born in De troit, Mich., in December, 1874. He took an engineering course at the University of Michigan, and then became a partner in a lumber ex- Continued on Back Page Miss Rachel Jackson Wins Highest Beta Club Honor in State Announcement has justt been made, by the National Secretary of the Honorary Beta Club, of the winner of the Beta Club scholarship for the State of North Carolina. This honor goes to Miss Rachel Chapman Jackson, honor graduate of 1935 Senior class of the Tryon high school, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jackson, Jr., of Tryon. The Beta Club Scholarsliip award is made to the outstanding Beta Club Senior in each State. This honor is decided by a competitive examination sent out from Nation al Headquarters. The Senior club member who makes the highest mark on this examination, in the state, is awarded highest honor, and given a scholarship. In North Carolina thirty-five clubs, representing some of the largest high schools in the state, entered the contest. Miss Jackson made a grade five points higher than the closest competitor. Beta Club members are chosen from Juniors and Seniors of the various high schools, these mem bers must have the highest scholar aistical record in the class. This record must be maintained thru out their membership in the club. The purpose of the Beta Club is the promotion of scholastic excel lency among high school students; the inculcating of cultural ambi tion in the members; and the in stilling of the ideals of loyalty, courage, honesty, and integrity in the members in their relation with their felow students and with their teachers.
